Most of the dead fish have been scooped out and the surface water has become a shade cleaner, but now residents living along a heavily polluted canal filled with raw sewage are worrying over what lurks underneath the murky water.
Among them was Michael Medlin, who on Wednesday stood upon a floating barge at the end of his yard and pointed down to a dark film that covered what he said was once white sand.
"There's not a prettier way to say it," he said. "That's human feces right there. My backyard is now a sewer. They're cleaning the top, but what about the bottom?"
In addition to reopening Taft Street late Wednesday, city workers and contractors continued their efforts to clean up the mess they made last week after a 48-inch sewage pipe burst in the middle of the busy thoroughfare and spilled raw sewage for nearly three days. The pipe normally transfers 10-15 million gallons of untreated sewage a day.
