but I don't find pecan pie weird or different. Pumpkin pie is made every year. This year a pecan pie was made also. Some years it is apple or cherry but never mincemeat.

20. The first time I tried sweet potato pie |
|
was at a Dinosaur Bar B Que restaurant in Rochester, New York. Awesome! and they put real homemade whipped cream on top...
There are several in New York state and one is coming to Newark, NJ and after that to Stamford CT.
If you have a chance to be near any of these restaurants, try a piece of sweet potato pie and the ribs are so good too

28. I wish I had the time to type out the sweet potato pie recipe I have for you ... |
|
but I don't have time today, sorry.
The recipe I have was printed in the Dallas Morning News around 30 years ago, it's from a south Dallas soul food restaurant that was famous for their sweat potato pies and it tastes out of this world :)
If you had the right recipe then I'd bet you'd say that sweet potato pie tastes nothing like like pumpkin pie.

Alton Brown did a great show on just this subject. Sweet Potato Pie, tastes better, easier to make, requires far less prep work, and its better for you.

you have to almost always rely on a canned product sweet potatoes are available fresh and that makes a huge taste difference if i make a sweet potato pie with canned sweets they taste just like pumpkin and the filling doesnt rise in baking with fresh you get a better reaction in the oven

37. No other alternative crusts? |
|
Say one made of shredded coconut? Or, ground/crushed nuts, or crushed gluten-free cookies to make a graham cracker-type crust?
But, when it comes to Thanksgiving, I skip the crust and make pumpkin custard. The filling is the best part, and I don't need all the extra fat and calories from the crust.

49. Only if it's good crust. |
|
A bad crust, such as most of these pre-made crusts, ruin a good pie. I actually love good homemade pie crust. I'll take the scraps and bake them with some cinnamon and sugar for a snack. The problem with making a crust is that you have to buy a can of shortening, and if you don't make pies that often, the stuff just gets rancid and goes to waste. Or, it tempts you to make more pies that you don't need to be eating. :-)

45. walla walla sweet onion pie |
|
INGREDIENTS:
1 pastry for single pie crust 4 sweet onions, such as Walla Walla, sliced 1 tablespoon olive oil 3 tablespoons butter 2 eggs 1 cup half and half 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1 pinch ground nutmeg 2 ounces Gruyere or Swiss cheese, shredded (divided) chopped fresh parsley PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line 9-inch pie pan with pastry, crimp edges and prick the bottom with a fork.
To keep the bottom from puffing and the sides from falling, line the crust with parchment paper or a large coffee filter and fill it with beans or rice.
Bake for 20 minutes, carefully remove the liner and bake for another 5 minutes. Set aside to cool. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degrees F.
Meanwhile, saute onions in oil and butter over low heat until golden yellow. Beat together eggs, half-and-half, flour, salt, pepper and nutmeg, then add onions and half of the shredded cheese.
Pour into prepared crust; sprinkle remaining cheese on top and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Garnish with parsley, if desired.

54. Pumpkin pi is the ratio of the circumference of the pumpkin and the radius of the pumpkin |
|
Because pumpkins are rarely, if ever, perfect spheres, pumpkin pi is usually not exactly equal to mathematical pi.
