President Barack Obama and members of his family volunteered their service in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday by helping Washington's Capital Area Food Bank, a local food pantry for people in need.
President Obama, his daughters, First Lady Michelle and her mother, Marian Robinson, and her nephew Avery Robinson were on hand at the food pantry to help with packing and distributing food bags for those in need.
Obama exchanged seasonal greetings and small talk with patrons as he handed out packets of carrots. His daughter Sasha was at his side handing out boxes of sweets.
The family was accompanied by players from the Oregon State basketball team, which is coached by the first lady's brother, Craig Robinson. The team is in the Washington area to play Towson University, near Baltimore, on Saturday.

Lynn Brantley, President and CEO of the CAFB, said, "This is truly a special day for all of us. Thank you President and Mrs. Obama, Sasha and Malia, and your family and friends for volunteering today and helping us feed those in need. You have made this a memorable Thanksgiving by helping send a message on behalf of those struggling with hunger in these difficult times."
Today's volunteers packed food bags for three of the CAFB's programs. Low-income seniors participating in the food bank's Senior Brown Bag program are provided with monthly bags of food and educational information on nutrition at 34 area locations. Children who receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch during the week at school are also given nutritious bags of food from Weekend Bag program distribution sites. The Kids Cafe program serves 2,000 children in 60 locations in recreation, religious and community centers and schools throughout the region. The bags are packed by volunteers -- 14,000 annually -- at the food bank and delivered by food bank trucks to the partner agencies, or sites designed to serve children.
Today's food recipients regularly participate in five of over 700 CAFB partner agencies in the Washington metro area: Brookland Manor Boys and Girls Club, Washington, D.C.; SEED, Inc., Riverdale, MD; Avondale/Manor Apartments, Hyattsville, MD; Queenstown, Mount Rainier, MD; and Shabach Emergency Resource & Empowerment Center, Landover, MD.

He called on “each of us to do our part” to help the nation return to prosperity.
“No matter how tough things are right now, we still give thanks for that most American of blessings, the chance to determine our own destiny,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, timed for the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S.
The president said the nation can overcome its challenges despite “all the partisanship and gridlock here in Washington.”
“The problems we face didn’t develop overnight, and we won’t solve them overnight,” Obama said. “But we will solve them. All it takes is for each of us to do our part.”

Later today, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will also be taking two unnamed turkeys, who weren't so lucky, to a local food bank here in D.C. that helps those in need. And I want to thank the folks at Jaindl's Turkey Farm in Orefield, Pennsylvania, for donating these dressed birds for the third year in a row.
A great writer once called Thanksgiving the "one day that is ours … the one day that is purely American."
When we gather around our tables tomorrow to share the fruits of our blessings, let's remember what that means. Let's be grateful for what we have. Let's be mindful of those who have less. Let's appreciate those who hold a special place in our lives, and make sure that they know it. And let's think about those who can't spend the holiday with their loved ones –- especially the members of our military serving overseas. I'd like to thank all our men and women in uniform and their families for their incredible service and devotion.
And that's what being an American is all about. Even when times are tough, we look out for each other. We lift each other up. And we remind ourselves just how lucky we are here, together, in the greatest country on Earth.
So from our family to yours, I want to wish everybody a wonderful and happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

Obama made the calls Thursday morning from the Oval Office to two members each from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy who are deployed in support of U.S. operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Obama has made the Thanksgiving calls each year since becoming president.
Obama is also encouraging Americans to remember the men and women of the military who are spending the holiday serving overseas. And he thanks those who are taking time out of their Thanksgiving celebrations to serve in soup kitchens and shelters.
The first family later Thursday was sitting down for a holiday feast including turkey, ham, cornbread stuffing, oyster stuffing, greens, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and dinner rolls. Dessert selections included banana cream pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie, huckleberry pie and cherry pie.
