85. same here. I was looking for a good Dem website and got linked to this. |

I think it was Buzzflash. It was during the Kerry campaign and I felt a real need to connect with other liberals. I remember posting with great hope as I went off to vote on Election Day, so I probably got here a couple of months earlier...it's been part of my daily life ever since...

31. I think it was a link on MoveOn's forum. I had just been laid off and was looking |
|
for people interested in what is/was going with this country politically, in response to the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
There was a science forum out there, which I can't remember the name of it, but it was the earliest example of what I was looking for. I heard that it was pretty much spaghetti code there, but it was the sort of thing I wanted. Email from MoveOn brought me to their website and I found their discussion forums there and then there was either a link or someone posted about DU, so that brought me here.

So, of course I had to start looking for rumors on the internets!
That was back just after 9/11.
I found a site called The Grudge Report, which is a parody of Drudge with a liberal slant, and at the time there was a link to DU there.
I lurked for a few months and then joined in early 2002.

Before 9/11, I voted and that was about it, but that event scared me witless and I began reading and trying to find out as much as I could. I registered here in January of 2003, I think, just in time for the build up to the Iraq war, so I had DU for that and don't think I would have survived the 2004 election without DU. :( It's become my home.

I did web searches looking for democratic sites. My preference was moderate democratic sites, but I found none of those having much life. I clicked on the DU link, stopped in to read a little. Although outnumbered by Netroots and Young Turk types, I have found enough moderates on DU to feel comfortable, and enough Liberals that engage in debate to feel like I am being communicated to.

52. Just after Selection 2000. I was SO down in the dumps, and feeling so alone. |
|
There was this huge backwash in the media that a) WASN'T covering anything or anyone who had a case to make against bush's legitimacy in office and b) was avalanching all over the place about how wonderful bush was/would be/always had been.
I started looking around on the internet and found a site called Resident Bush. As in - can't call him President because he got in there fraudulently. But he IS, in (sad) truth, a Resident of the White House and of the Oval Office, so he could fairly and accurately be titled Resident bush. I liked that a lot and was SO happy that I finally found SOMEONE SOMEWHERE (besides my husband and a few equally devastated and disenfranchised friends) who saw it the way I did. I was so happy I even sent him a donation. I was pretty new to internet-anything, so I just started looking around, in the margins where other links were, and I found Buzzflash.
Then I started looking around Buzzflash and reading all the articles and commentaries posted, and I noticed there were other interesting-looking things in the margins there as well. One of them was the Democratic Underground. And I've been here ever since.
This place, at times, was the ONLY place that helped me save my sanity during that wretched time. More than ANY other. This was the most satisfying of all. I discovered other wonderful links and sites and stuff through DU, but DU seems to be the capitol city of "Nation Internet" for me. Still is. I come here first. And I usually get to other places through here.

Around the time of the "Mission Accomplished" debacle. I was looking for information on the '04 election, and stumbled upon this site. I was so tired of the BushCo BS, had just moved to a very red state, and needed a safe haven. I found that here at DU. I post under a different username these days, but what hasn't changed is that I can still come here and find great people, and intelligent discussion. Thanks, and here's to another 10 years and more! :toast: :kick:

I'm not even sure to this day if the raindog on beliefnet is the same raindog here on DU but I was so impressed by their smart posts, I googled them and stumbled upon DU.
At the time, I was working part time as a grant writer for a local land preservation agency and one of the regular volunteers got me hooked on beliefnet but I was always uncomfortable there as an atheist. Once I hit on DU, I was hooked. I love the message board structure since it works with my quirky work schedule.

|
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 12:39 AM by U4ikLefty
I was reading the stories from abroad & stumbled onto their comments section.
Someone mentioned "those communists at Democratic Underground"...LOL!!!
I lurked for about 1 1/2 years until I came back from the protests days after the Invasion of Iraq in March of 2003.
I loved talking in those early times, but if I said I missed those days I would be lying...Bush sucked!!!

73. From someone who I just learned today passed away yesterday. |
|
Her name was Mary, and she rarely posted (under the name merci_me), but she had been reading here since almost the beginning. She used to send me links to news and articles here that were better than any "major" news outlet. Then I joined and became a regular poster.
She and I lost touch over the years, and a mutual friend and DUer emailed me today to tell me she had passed. She was a lifelong Democrat, a progressive, and a tenacious and determined woman. I wish we'd kept in touch instead of letting a rift divide us.

Had a coworker in tears. One couple in their late sixties actually planned a trip to Spain, they were so unnerved. I had family members nearly unhinged (thank god we're all liberals). I was already on DU at that point which is why I was "stable." this place helped me enormously...DU and Stephanie Miller, who saved what sanity I had left...

80. From a link someone posted on my locally-based Detroit Yes! website forum a couple years ago |

Wish that I would have known about or discovered it many years ago.
It likely would have helped me get through the very dark 8 years of the Shrub administration, and the Cheney-neocon era, as well as the economic and political devastation that it caused, and still is causing in our country, much more easily...oh well.

I found bartcop during the run up to the Iraq war and sometime between then and Nov 2004 I followed a link and started lurking here at DU, glad to find a message board that had more traffic than Bartcop. Then on election night when the traffic was so much I couldn't get on, in a panic I tried to register and it took awhile but the mods got me in! Thank god because that night and the next week were brutal, I was glad to have DU.
On edit: my join date says Oct but I'm certain it wasn't until election night. Odd. Unless my memory is that bad! I know I had tried to join once and it didn't work, maybe that was that date?

95. I followed a link from a low-carb message board. |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 06:19 AM by ladyVet
The board owners were not going to allow anymore political postings, and another member there posted a link to DU. Since I liked what I'd read of her postings, I followed her here, and mostly read the home page and a few general discussion posts.
That was in early 2001, and I didn't realize this place had only been active for a few months at that time until recently! :dunce:
Anyway, I was popping in on a daily basis, and on 9-11 I came here looking for information--I remember I could barely see the board through my tears--and was hooked from there.
I finally joined in Oct '04, and I think my first post was on election day.

|
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 08:42 AM by deutsey
I originally checked out DU right after the Coronation of Bush but for some reason didn't stick around.
Then I kept seeing the Top 10 link on Buzzflash (which I read faithfully and even used to contribute articles to) and started reading the list on DU every week. Then I eased into the forum and have been here as a lurker or active participant (it ebbs and flows) ever since.

a group of community boards that CNN used to host, and right around the time of Chandra Levy and the selection of 2000 one of their threads went out of control (drugs forum) where the pro-drug reform members began overwhelming everyone else and suddenly the whole network of CNN community message boards disappeared.
But just as that happened I was then lurking at Salon after being on a plane with one of their contributors, Bob Someone, (Calahan?) who does those weird cartoons that are adult cartoons, and he was railing on in drunken rant about Joe Lieberman, whom he had grown up with and warned me and my wife about.
I went to read some of his stuff and saw a link to DU someone posted in a thread on Salon's political boards and then lurked here for about 9 years before registering just after the '08 deception (oops, I mean election).
Does Salon still exist? (seriously that is how addicted to DU I have become)
Hands off my Social Security! Hands off Latin America!
