Whoa! Molestation by Syracuse Ass't BB Coach Just Got Red Hot: Bernie Fine's wife had abuse concerns
Edited on Sun Nov-27-11 03:00 PM by Are_grits_groceries
In a tape-recorded 2002 telephone conversation, the wife of Syracuse associate head coach Bernie Fine admitted she had concerns that her husband had sexually molested a team ball boy in their home, but said she felt powerless to stop the alleged abuse.

Bobby Davis, who has publicly accused Bernie Fine of years of molestation that Davis said started when he was in the seventh grade, legally recorded his Oct. 8, 2002, phone call to Laurie Fine.

"I know everything that went on, you know," Laurie Fine said on the call, obtained by Outside the Lines from Davis. "I know everything that went on with him ... Bernie has issues, maybe that he's not aware of, but he has issues ... And you trusted somebody you shouldn't have trusted ... "

She continued: "Bernie is also in denial. I think that he did the things he did, but he's somehow through his own mental telepathy has erased them out of his mind."

Third accuser says Syracuse coach Bernie Fine sexually abused him as child

Head Coach Boeheim's job may also be in trouble. He has defended Fine which is okay, but he has called the accusers extortionists and other names which is not. They may turn out to be lying. However, calling out abuse accusers isn't very smart.

Boeheim says he has known Fine for a long time, and he has never seen anything. That is the case many times with abusers. Boeheim isn't omniscient, and he needs to stick with standing by his assistant coach and quit disparaging the accusers.

3. I think news about possible molestation is very important.
If bringing to account those who have raped kids is just 'hiding the collapse', something is wrong with our priorities. Both stories are important.

9. So, you would rather that the rape of children be
relegated to a lower level because of your preference of what should take precedence? There's room above the fold for both. This s a very sad 'contest' you have set up. Nobody wins in either story, but they both deserve coverage.

10. I am sick of babyfuckers. They don't need to dominate news. Lock them up and be done with them.
Someone will be listening to that shit for the next two months non-stop now. Not me thank you.

11. One of the reasons that there are too many
babyfuckers operating is the attitude that you take. Many people don't want to hear about it. So it gets no coverage usually and nothing concrete is done to stop it and help the victims.

I'm a survivor and your attitude quite frankly makes me mad. Do you wonder that the abused don't cme forward when they read a harsh remark like yours? It isn't easy or fast to lock the abusers up. Would that the problem could be so easily done with. It takes support and courage for those responsible to be held accountable.

I'm out of this because my bp is shooting up and I have made myself clear.

6. She was probably abused herself
but that doesn't excuse her from not reporting the concerns to the police...

with Davis after he turned 18.

7. not so sure about Boeheim
OP: "Boeheim says he has known Fine for a long time, and he has never seen anything. That is the case many times with abusers."

One of the ballboys stated that he often stayed in the same hotel room as Fine. He stated that one time Boeheim entered Fines room, and upon seeing the ballboy gave a look of disgust.

14. SU and ESPN has some serious PR issues with this......
3 accussors, one from a very questionable source, and ESPN has been apparently sitting on the story for years.

17. Laurie Fine KNEW he abused this guy and never said anything
what the fuck is wrong with these people? their own comfort is more important than the lives of children.

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/11/read_the_transcript_excerpts_f.html

Laurie: What did he want you to do? You can be honest with me.
Bobby: What do you think? What he always does.
Laurie: He wants you to grab him? Or blow him?
Bobby: He tried to make me grab him. But first he’d try to grab me and start touching me. ...
Laurie: Right. But when he gave you the money, what did he want for that? He wanted you to grab him or he wanted to do you?
Bobby: He wanted to do me. He wanted me to touch him. He tried to make me touch him a couple of times. He’d grab my hand and then I’d pull away. Then he’d put me in your bed and then, you know, put me down. And I’d try to go away. Then he put his arm on top of my chest. He goes, If you want this money, you’ll stay right here. I’d try to leave and he’d grab me real hard. You know what he does — I told you about this before, right? He’d grab you if you tried to walk away and he’d say, I’ll pull it off or something like that.
Laurie: Right, right.
Bobby: I told you that before.
Laurie: But you never had any oral sex with him?
Bobby: No. I think he’d want to.
Laurie: Of course, he would. Why wouldn’t he?

...

Bobby: Exactly. When I stayed there in your basement, he’d come down there every night. I’m like, what the heck, what’s Laurie thinking?
Laurie: What did I think? ... And then he’d come down to where you were every night. And he’d say to me, ‘Go check (their son).’ Or... Go lay with him. Go upstairs.’ Anything to get me out of the room. And I knew. I told you when I was walking down the stairs at night, I’d say to myself, Guaranteed he’s not in there. When I’d look in, his papers would be spread out all over and he’d be gone. Right down the basement, door closed.
Bobby: He did that every night.
Laurie: You know what, go to a place where there’s gay boys. Find yourself a gay boy. ... Get your rocks off, and have it be over with. He needs that male companionship that I can’t give him. ...
Bobby: You know how he’d always try to get me in the shower. You knew about that, right?
Laurie: Yeah. I still have a graphic memory of that, thank you.
Bobby: Whenever you weren’t there ...(unintelligible)
Laurie: He’d always say, ‘Bobby and I are going in the Jacuzzi.’ And I’d go to the bathroom and I’d try to come in. The door’d be locked. I’d check: ‘What's going on?’ ‘Nothing.’ I said, ‘Unlock the door.’ ‘No, we’re in our underwear.’
Bobby: So, it’s not me, it’s him.
Laurie: I understand that. You don’t have to explain to me.
Bobby: I’m trying to convince myself.
Laurie: Convince yourself. You did nothing wrong. You did nothing wrong, and you were a child, and he took advantage of that.

This makes me want to SCREAM!!!!!! SHE SAID NOTHING BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T WANT HER COMFORTABLE LIFE TO BE INTERRUPTED.

She needs to go to jail along with her husband. Neither of them deserve to be free in our society when they have so little concern for the well being of children.

19. She's disgusting. She's aiding and abetting the abuser. And she never went to the police?
And then she had an affair with the boy himself? Disgusting. Horrible.

20. I cannot believe this mother did not try to protect children from her husband
it's just incomprehensible to me.

she knew he was abusing kids as he did it and didn't FORCE HIM to go to a psychiatrist. She could have forced him. She could have gone to police with this guy when he was a child.

How does a person live with herself knowing she allowed children to be abused in her home and DID NOTHING?!?!?!?!

And, you know, let's be honest about this - the reason she didn't say anything is because of the disruption to her own easy life. That's the problem with too many people. They won't do the right thing because it costs them some material comfort.

21. That was so awful. I saw it on ESPN this morning.
I'm not sure, but I think after he made the recording of the phone conversation, it was
turned over to the local police?

Who did NOTHING ?!?

It took the Penn State thing to bring this in to the light?

You have to hope that from now on, police and everyone else will start to see these
crimes for what they are.

23. It was at least turned over to ESPN who did nothing
whether it was also turned over to the Syracuse police is a good question.

24. It was. But the police chief was an ex-basketball player.
Here's the quote:

Davis said he reported the abuse to Syracuse police in 2003, but that a detective told him that the statute of limitations had run out. Davis said the detective told him that if he knew of boys being molested by Fine at the time, that Syracuse police would investigate those allegations. Davis said he told the detective that he thought other boys were being molested but that he had only direct knowledge of Fine molesting him.

At the time, the Syracuse police chief was Dennis Duval, a former Syracuse basketball player for Boeheim. Duval, who retired in 2004, could not be reached for comment. He played at Syracuse from 1971 to 1974 and started with the Syracuse Police Department in 1978.

22. As a Syracuse fan, I did not support Boeheim basically dismissing the allegations.
Yes, there were other investigations and there wasn't any evidence supporting the claims, but I believe folks need to let the investigation take its course before stating that the kid is lying, as Boeheim did.

I am glad Fine is gone. Other staff members, including Boeheim, should also get the boot if they had any part in covering this up.
