Very ominous and shocking development in Canadian media regulations. A boon to the hard Right.

The CRTc, the Canadian counterpart to the FCC, is proposing to give Canadian TV and radio stations more leeway to broadcast false or misleading news.

snip

Michael Geist, a University of Ottawa law professor specializing in communications issues, finds it ironic that the CRTC wants to limit the scope of the prohibition on false or misleading news in Canada just as debate is raging over the impact of venomous, often grossly distorted, political discourse on the U.S. airwaves.

snip

With a new right-leaning all-news network, Sun TV News, about to launch in March, Geist noted there's concern in some quarters that Canada is about to import the more aggressive, American approach to political coverage. He suggested the CRTC's proposed regulatory change will only magnify those concerns.

snip

The CRTC quietly posted notice of the proposed change, which is slated to go into effect on Sept. 1, on its website last week. The agency is accepting comments from the public until Feb. 9.

American and Canadian NeoCons have set their sights on literally destroying Canada. It is shocking to realize that there is a massive, well financed effort to move Canada right and get Harper a majority government. Is it simply coincidental that long standing regulations protecting Canadians from media lies and distortions are being dropped just as a far Right FOX style propaganda channel starts broadcasting in March? Hardly.

Harper also wants to cancel public financing of elections so he can reap corporate millions.

This is serious stuff.

6. Amen. Fox News-like networks are starting to infiltrate Europe as well.

A friend in the Netherlands, who is a legal immigrant from Asia, has written me several times, talking about how there's a new far-right Dutch network (almost identical to Fox), championing Geert Wilders.

My friend said she felt welcome in the country when she moved there in the early 1980s, but has run into a lot of anti-Asian bigotry since the rise of Wilders and the new rightwing media.

just as it did the U.S. This is the equivalent of doing away with the fairness doctrine.
