SCRIPT-
(CBS News) More than 16 million children are now living in poverty and, for many of them, a proper home is elusive. Some cash-strapped families stay with relatives; others move into motels or homeless shelters. But, as Scott Pelley reports, sometimes those options run out, leaving an even more desperate choice: living in their cars. 60 Minutes returns to Florida, home to one third of America's homeless families, to find out what life is like for the epidemic's youngest survivors.
The following is a script of "Hard Times Generation" which aired on Nov. 27, 2011. Scott Pelley is correspondent, Bob Anderson and Nicole Young, producers.

4. These kids should just pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
Oh wait, the "donated" shoes given them by a socialist agency didn't have bootstraps attached. Well, when Pres Gingrich takes office, they can clean their schools in exchange for $.25 an hour. These kids were amazing in their ability to stay positive while living in a very tough situation. The 1% living high off the misfortunes of others could learn a lot from them.

6. I know
and I was saying to myself "This should not happen here. Forget it, tax me more so it doesn't." Society just shouldn't fail them like this.

God forbid the 1% pay more to keep people off the streets :eyes:

7. The sheer numbers,
the MILLIONS of kids living in poverty, it's just shameful. And then to have rich, corrupt politicians make fun and degrade them -- there are no words.

8. Republican "leadership" should be forced to watch this.
One of their basic problems historically is that many were born on third base into wealthy families and have no connection to or empathy for the poor. No doubt some would cross the street to avoid getting too close to a poor person.

9. They always argue
that they would give more to charity with lower taxes. Well, their taxes are low now, so why aren't they giving...and why are people on the streets since it's such an ideal situation for them?

12. I'm surprised nobody is charging them for parking

They are taking up valuable parking spaces and not paying for them.

If people would stop giving them handouts, they'd be forced to give up the easy life.

14. There's no excuse for this. Not in a country that spends the way we spend for war and killing.
What strong kids these are! They deserve a whole lot better, but I imagine in Rick Scott's Florida they won't get it.

19. I assume they're also breaking the law
Isn't it against the law in many localities to fall asleep in a car on public property? That was explained to me once when a policeman in Newport Beach, CA caught me in my car with my eyes closed, aftyer I'd had one too many at a local bar. I couldn't drive, but apparently I couldn't sleep it off, either. The policeman told me my options were to accept arrest or walk it off in the night air.

signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

- Dwight D. Eisenhower

I wish someone would update these figures. And that every voter would stand by these sentiments, and not settle for whatever incumbent happens to hold a seat, or whatever marketable bland pol those at the top deem 'electable'.

24. Not wise enough to stay the hell out of Iran.
Eisenhower was responsible for the coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran.

We're still paying for that mistake today.
