Bill Clinton says Gingrich surge a result of thoughtful positions
Source: CNN

(CNN) - Newt Gingrich earned praises this week from former adversary Bill Clinton, with whom Gingrich butted heads during his tenure as House speaker in the 1990s.

In an interview with the conservative online publication Newsmax, Clinton said Gingrich’s positions on immigration would help him appeal to independent voters.

He’s articulate and he tries to think of a conservative version of an idea that will solve a legitimate problem,” Clinton said.

He continued: “For example, I watched the national security debate ... And Newt said two things that would make an independent voter say, ‘Well, I gotta consider that.’”

1. I love it when Bill puts his hand on someone's back, feeling for the place to slip the knife.....
Good on Bill. Way to bring up Newt's amnesty stand to the crazy-ass far right...

2. Newt Gingrich would be a disaster, and Clinton should have
said so.

3. So would Romney

And Clinton's smart enough to know that he's far more electable in a general election than Gingrich ever could be.

4. Each one of them would be a disaster, but what would be the point?

At this point, saying about any candidate "anyone who would vote for him/her is an idiot" is unhelpful in the larger scheme of things.

There is plenty of time for Newt supporters to become disenchanted, and for backers of other candidates to dislike Newt in the event he gets the nomination, that it is not worth it.

Someone who is registered to vote will either vote for your side, vote for the other guy, or not vote. Until then, they remain a potential vote for your side.

6. No, Clinton did what he was supposed to do in an interview with Newsmax....
He took the candidate most likely to appeal to Newsmax voters, and did not run him down.

Instead, he highlighted the position of Newt's guaranteed to drive Newsmax's readership crazy--amnesty, and praised it.

This gives the message that Newt isn't very far from the thinking of centrist Dems. This is a masterful run-down of Newt.

5. I have to agree that Gingrich does have well thought out positions - completely horrible positions
perhaps frequently even evil positions -but nonetheless - well thought out. He has the ideological stridency that reminds me of a hardline and highly rigid Marxist-Leninist - perhaps of the rabid Trotskyite variety. Except of course directed in capitalist rather than collectivist direction

7. This is a masterful move by Clinton.
Just watch. RW'ers heads will explode left-and-right.
