Town [Saranac Lake, NY] keeps Wal*Mart out, opens own store

Saranac Lake residents, rather than allow a 100,000+ sq. ft. Supercentre be built in their town, sold $100 shares to community members in order to finance a small-but-locally-owned retail store. Since Saranac Lake is only about a 3-hour drive away, I'll have to pop in this Winter and giv them the business :)

Or, at least, it was when I was 17 and climbed onto the roof of the former tb sanitarium I was staying in to watch a sunset do magic to the early autumn trees surrounding Lake Flower.

Distances are measured in hours driven, snow storms are measured in how fast you drive in the passing lane, and three hours is a local jaunt.

but honestly, many of the Oswegans I know (family up there, used to live there) would say things like "all the way to Syracuse?" or "all the way into the city?" when mentioning going shopping and Syracuse is 45 min. from Oswego. But then again, they were not especially intrepid souls and did not leave Oswego much in the winter except for Christmas shopping. Seeing how Oswego gets like 2x the snow than Onondaga Co. I can understand that. You might get here, but then, they could close the thruway or 481 and you won't get back for a day or so.

I met my husband in Oswego at college and still have some tangental family up there. (I say tangental as they are extended ex- step- family and there is no real word for that.....)

Saranac is gorgeous. Thanks for the post. The rest of Upstate should follow in concert. Bring Dey Brothers back!
