Isn't it synonymous with "given name" (as opposed to surname)?

They're looking for anything that negates his legitimacy. I mean, if you read down the thread, there's a lot of "if he was born in Hawaii" goin' on.

1. Hawaiian law stipulated that all children be given a "christian" name.

2. Barak is an Islamic name

3. Hence, Barak Obama was not born in Hawaii.

QED

9. Barrack is a Christian name
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 08:02 AM by pschoeb
It just a variation on Barak, the Old Testament Judge Deborah's general, who defeated the Caananite armies of Sisera. I mean if Jewish names aren't Christian, then Jesus's name isn't Christian.

But people are right, the term christian name, comes from christening name, that is the name given at christening, as opposed to the name one gets automatically from ones parents.

Are you kidding? This is the smoking gun that proves (a) he is a Muslim and (b) his parents were not married. Therefore, he cannot be a legal US President.

But we all knew that already.

Like many of you, I didn't realize that the constitution also required that you be born in wedlock, and not Muslim, to be eligible for the Presidency. And here we were thinking you just had to be a natural born citizen. :eyes:

"He didn't have a Christian name--therefore he must not have been born in Hawaii."
"I see, I see (strokes chin thoughtfully)... so, what you're saying is that he's Muslim and born out of wedlock--which are both right there in the Constitution as bars to the presidency? Case closed!"

Way to totally miss even a stupid point, freeper. :eyes:

13. Barack is a name mentioned in the Bible, so I guess it is a christian name.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-11 08:17 AM by notadmblnd
Barack Obama's first name is the anglicized version of Baraka, which means 'blessing' in Kiswahili (aka Swahili), a language spoken by Senator Obama's Kenyan father.

The word "Barack" is shared among several languages. First, it is a word in the (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitic_languages) Semitic family of languages. As such it mistakenly has been thought to have the root in Hebrew written as baruch, but since the word Barak in Hebrew exists independently, pronounced as Barak with no twisting of sounds, it is the true word from which any meaning should be taken. A version in Aramaic (berek), a version in Arabic (baraka). (See Strong's Hebrew Bible Dictionary, entries 1288-1294.) It also occurs as a loan word in non-Semitic languages that have been influenced by these Semitic languages, such as Kiswahili (the most widely spoken African language). As often happens, cognate words are similar in pronunciation. What appears in a later-appearing language may sound like something else in the earlier language. And in English we sometimes see words that are pronounced the same and even spelled the same, but that have very different meanings.

Baraka means 'blessing' in Kiswahili and comes from the Arabic spoken by the Omani Arabs that lived and traded along the coast of East Africa. Though it came to Kiswahili from Arabic it no longer has any sectarian connotations and is in common use amongst East Africans of all faiths. It is a common name for boys in Kenya and Tanzania.

Barack or Barak means 'lightning' in Hebrew. The name Barak is also mentioned in the Bible in the book of Judges. Barak was part of the story of the prophetess Deborah.

Baruch (or Baruwk, Baruk, Strong, 1263) and its cognates berek and baraka all mean the same. Strong, 1288, says "barak, baw-rak', a primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit)." (See http://www.virtualchristiancenter.com/biblestudytools/kjvstrongs/STRHEB12.htm)

Regardless of how one spells the name, it gives two possible and not contradictory meanings, and one true meaning. One is "a blessing from God," and another is "a blessing from God that the individual may pass on to others as a benefit to them." and the true meaning that cannot be translated any other way is the name Barak which means Lightning

and

Ummmm....Can anyone point out the words in the 4th amendment about only children of two married citizens can legally be natural born citizens? I mean, it must be there...Freeperville says so...and we all know they are the most educated and knowledgeable Constitutional scholars available, right?

33. They get that ideal from the American military occupations that prevented a lot of
children from claiming American citizenship who were the by products of the sex trade that boomed around military bases. The birthers are trying to use military law that caused this oversight by making it almost impossible for the woman who gave birth to the children created by the sex trade to claim citizenship for said off spring, after all the sex trade is illegal in the US, so the children were illegal so they were not citizens.

None of this has anything to do with Obama, his parents or his birth, but in the minds of the wing nuts they are right because when Obama was born not all states saw inter racial unions as legal, but that is racists which they know, so because some states made inter racial marriages illegal Obama is the illegal off spring of a mixed race couple so therefore by such he is not an citizen of the US. Funny thing is since 1964 made these laws illegal and therefore void, the wing nuts are basically using race mixing as an excuse to deny Obama legal citizenship without bringing race mixing into it, which would make them racists, so they come off as nutty.

There are clues to their reasoning, like their belief that the father decides citizenship and not the mother, that smacks of the slavery years, remember off spring of slaves and slave owner were not considered free men. So my conclusion is the birther nuts are trying to deny citizenship to Obama because of racist ideology, plain and simple thinking in a complex world.

Since there is no requirement that a president's parents be married, wouldn't that (because of their sexist worldview) completely destroy there claim of PRESIDENT Obama being a british subject because his father was?

Or they'd know there are plenty of people born prior to 1967 who have Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese and Chinese names. And during the sixties, there were lots of made-up counterculture names like Moonbeam.

I once knew a Portuguese family named Silva, and among their sons (who are now in their 70s) were "HiHo" and "Quick." I am not making this up.
