According to a fellow student, Sarah Palin has opened doors for other women... |
|
:wtf:
It was introduction speech day in class today. One student did her speech on Sarah Palin. My head nearly fell off my shoulders when she declared that Sarah Palin opened doors for other women.
Trying to think of how she opened doors for other women, but my brain is incapable of doing 180 degrees like that.

1. Well, when Palin's in the room, it's impossible to be the dumbest person there |
|
So I guess that's a way of opening doors.
Or something...

in the Republican Party.
Realize until last year... no Republican Candidate would use a woman as a VEEP. So in a way she is right.
Granted, this was because Geraldine Ferraro led the way (if this kid is young Geraldine who?) and Hillary Clinton was a VERY SERIOUS contender... both were Democrats. So if you look at it this way, she has.
Granted, I'd make the argument that Grandpa McCain was not serious about the presidency when he chose Sarah, since he did chose St. Sarah for reasons that are not precisely experience et al. There were FAR BETTER and more experienced candidates (see Hutchinson) but she was chosen for her pretty face and ahem... relative youth.
Ask this student though if she even knows who Geraldine Ferraro is... I am willing to bet she will not.

She did mention that Palin was the first woman Repub VEEP nomination in her speech. I don't think she knows who Ferraro is either.

13. I don't think McCain was not serious about the presidency |
|
The whole choosing Sarah Palin thing was due to republicans actually think so little of women that they believed that putting a woman on the ticket would be enough to attract Hillary supporters disappointed that Obama had won the democratic nomination.

Of course, they forgot about the fact that most women whom supported Hillary for POTUS don't naturally support the GOP's anti-women policies and the GOP having a woman on the ticket clearly wouldn't be enough to get them to vote for McLame and Failin'. :banghead:

21. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, for many reasons, |
|
including how serious you are... would have been a far better choice. They went for the model, not the person with experience.
Though I agree with you. the place for women is in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. That is the ethos in the RNC.

6. Someone needs to tell her about... |
|
...Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Janet Napolitano, Bella Abzug, Shirley Chisholm... hell, go all the way back to Jeanette Rankin who was elected to Congress before women even had the vote. Name names. Note, be sure to include some women who were governors of their states (e.g. Janet Napolitano). Ask her what doors, exactly, has Palin opened that were not already open?

7. Palin has set women back, unfortunately. |
|
She lacks expertise in any area and is chiefly a creation of 24/7 media coverage, a creature of sound bites and suits that look good on television.

but I can't for the life of me figure out for what? I suppose that many right-wingers cling to her because she represents their "version" of Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama- in terms of her prominence and coverage by the corporate media. They may want to invest so heavily in her because she'll do and say anything that skewers and enrages us on the left no matter how dumb and/or offensive she is and also probably because she is a woman they can point to as if to prove that conservatives are not just a bunch of sexist Methuselahs. Of course, as much as they want to latch on to her, Palin is simply not comparable to either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama- but they will never admit as much nor do her shortcomings, questionable decisions, or actual lack of any meaningful accomplishments matter to her devotees.

Doors can lead to many places, not all of them are positive.
Women are already in politics, so that's nothing new. Women have already been part of reality shows, have had books ghost written for them, been on talk shows.
I'd really like to know what new doors Sarah has opened for anyone but herself.

she really hated that woman. "She wants everyone to have to stay home and not do anything - except herself!" she would exclaim. And mom was right. Palin is this generation's Schlafly.
