A former Republican Senator considered to be a candidate for the party's 2012 presidential nomination was recently confronted by a blogger with a perplexing question: Being pro-life, if you found yourself in a fertility clinic that was burning down, and you had a choice between saving a 2-year-old girl or a petri dish of five fertilized eggs, what would you do?

Rick Santorum, an employee of the Republican Fox News Channel and former US Senator from Pennsylvania, didn't seem too sure.

"I'd try to rescue as many as those children as possible," he told blogger Mike Stark while filling in as a guest host for a Friday broadcast of the Bill Bennett radio talk show "Morning in America."

Santorum dismissed the question as "a false choice," claiming later in the conversation that if put in such a situation, he would instead "save all human life."

This guy make Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman look sane and that's saying alot!

1. The blogger left him an out
He should have buttoned down the question and said something like, "You only have time to save one, and you must make a choice. Your only two possible answers in this situation is save the girl or save the eggs."

2. Make it 1000 eggs in a large cannister ... you can't carry both at the same time.
Then listen to him babble.

4. Hypothetical:

There's an explosion and fire at a fertility clinic. Fortunately, the clinic is in a blue city in a blue state, and has avoided slashing the budgets of emergency services workers.

The fire department arrives on-scene quickly, and dedicated public employees swarm into the building, dragging out doctors, nurses, patients, and children as the flames rage around them.

The next day, the local liberal paper's headline is "Hero firefighters save 15 from clinic inferno"

The local conservative paper's headline is "Clinic fire kills 18,000+; only 15 saved from clinic inferno".

Three days later, the mayor awards several medals to the firefighters in a public ceremony.

Or:

here's an explosion and fire at a fertility clinic. Unfortunately, the clinic is in a red city in a red state, and has slashed the budgets of emergency services workers.

The fire department arrives on-scene at some point, and dedicated public employees swarm into the building, dragging out doctors, nurses, patients, and children as the flames rage around them.

The next day, the local liberal paper's headline is "Hero firefighters save 15 from clinic inferno"

The local conservative paper's headline is "Clinic fire kills 18,000+; only 15 saved from clinic inferno".

Three days later, the district attorney files charges of negligent manslaughter against the firefighters for ignoring the unborn people in favor of born people. "By ignoring the thousands of fertilized eggs that could have easily been rescued en masse, these government employees caused the worst loss of life on American soil since the Second Battle of Bull Run in 1862". He's also considering filing discrimination charges on behalf of the late unborn dead.

SantorumLand... an amazing spectacle indeed!

6. It's a question pro-lifers can't answer
I cornered a conservative once into saying he'd actually save the dishes (my hypothetical was 1,000) but when I kept after him about his choice, the look in his eyes told me he himself couldn't believe what he was saying.
