Former Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge, accused for years of torturing confessions from murder suspects, was sentenced today to 4 1/2 years in prison on perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

Hours before U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow handed down the sentence, Burge apologized for bringing “disrepute” on the police department but he remained unrepentant about the torture allegations against him.

1. That's over twice the maximum sentencing guidelines.
I guess the appeal to his military service didn't help any.

Neither did the letters to the judge.

3. Not true. Prosecutors wanted 30 years.
Defense asked for "single digits". They got their wish.

4. I'm sure they did, but the federal sentencing guidelines were 21 to 27 months. n/t

2. His mistake was he didn't go on TV to admit doing it and saying he'd do it again. n/t
