Doctor: Giffords heard cheers leaving Ariz., smiled

She heard them, smiled, and tears welled up in her eyes.

The caravan carrying Rep. Gabrielle Giffords swept past cheering crowds Friday as she left the hospital in Tucson, Ariz., where she dazzled doctors with her recovery from being shot in the head two weeks ago, and was moved to Houston for rehabilitation.

Children sat on their parents' shoulders as the motorcade passed. Many waved. Others carried signs wishing "Gabby" well.

"It was very emotional and very special," said Dr. Randall Friese, who traveled with Giffords.

7. I was there today late in the afternoon setting up some appointments...

...but it was almost certainly long after she had left -- still several dozen
people (seemingly almost as many newsvans) and TONS of flowers, candles
and shrines.

I wasn't aware that she was leaving today. Approaching the hospital itself,
I had to fight down a really strong impulse to shout, "WE LOVE YOU, GABBY!!!"
until I remembered just where I was and how totally inappropriate that kind of
noise would have been for other patients.
