Don't you know life is a team sport?
Some super-stars come up, and sink down, there's always management up your ass and greed. Let's not even get into TV time. It's killed watching the NFL.
Listen, if I could love ESPN and watch hockey with my husband because it's like life (it IS life), then you can transfer these concepts because of who's at the helm.

I don't enjoy playing, watching, or listening to people talk about sports, I don't care WHO it is.
I appreciate Keith for speaking the truth about the powers that be. If he goes back to sports, I'm not going to force myself to watch something I can't stand.
What you're basically telling me is to take my time and energy OFF of important subjects and turn it to bread and circuses because that's where our former spokesman has gone (if that ends up being the case)?
Well, THAT would certainly be a step in the right direction. :sarcasm:
Sorry, but your reasoning makes ZERO sense to someone who hates anything to do with sports.
PS: My boyfriend loves sports, but that's something he watches on his own or with friends who also enjoy that ... not with me.
EDIT to correct spelling error.

75. No, I'm not telling you that... |
|
... although, according to what you've posted, you don't seem to be able to distinguish a person who is able to take an interest in looking AT sports with a person who is willing and able to examine the rest of the world. Believe me... as you go through life, whether your second interest is sports or not, there are concepts that are universal, which is WHY I recognize a talented individual LIKE KEITH OLBERMANN coming from that background. He makes the connection with the viewer/listener. It is a universally used TALENT.
It's too bad you "hate" something that someone you love actually enjoys. Maybe you're not as versatile as you might be, but that's your business. And, no... it doesn't mean that you have to like what your significant other likes. I just see it as a self-limiting.
I would bet you (if you have ESPN) that if you sat down and watched an episode of "Pardon The Interruption" with Tony Cornheiser and Mike Willabon (I'm probably misspelling their names), you'd actually get something out of it. Plus, it's entertaining, and I've found, in my 30 plus years of marriage that there are some things that a "mixed couple" might enjoy together, which adds to their relationship. I doubt that it's much of a priority doing this, or you wouldn't have said what you did,
And, before you think I'm trying to shell out any advice about what you SHOULD do, I'm not. I'm simply making the larger point in that life, whether you realize it or not, IS related to team sports.
Snark if you want, but that was my point.

... Baseball is like Housewives of Beverly Hills on some playing field?
Gee, not having parked my ass in front of the television to actually WATCH a thing called Housewives of Beverly Hills, I guess I must have missed that point.
My favorite team sports are limited, and I guess I'm not a baseball fan (like Olbermann), but more of a basketball (College Women's basketball is actually better), some football (that's limited, believe me) and hockey, which is where I like to really let it rip.
By the way, welcome to DU.

... better you should make your first post about the individual's right to choose, so welcome to DU.
I make the broader point about that while the rest of the world has done since dawn of civilization, and for what some television personalities (LIKE KEITH) have done better. If you truly understand that life is like a team game, you'll get this broader point.
We all play sports, and if we understand the "game" from the time we are children, then when we have children, it offers much of what we don't seem to have the school systems engage in, "playing with others".
Yes, the point was "playing with others".... which is what you understand with the rare individual who delivers the news on SPORTS or OTHERWISE.

Invented tribal bullshit.
Erase the results of every game ever played and it would have zero impact.
Except to the checkbooks and egos of the players and the emotions of those who feel the need to identify with a tribe.

Everything is a game, there are winners and losers in everything.
That is, unless you are just sitting around and gazing at your navel. Even then, you are losing because you are not moving forward.
In business, I always played to win, not just to do OK.
That's why I do not have to work any longer.

Love and sacrifice and living with and caring for and creating and raising children, losing children, nursing your spouse through illness, that is a GAME?
Life is NOT a game.
There is no "score".
We live as well as we can, we love as much as we can, we leave when our number is up.

132. Sure, you'll have that, especially in some sports... |
|
and to a degree in every major league sport there are checkbooks and egos. But then you come across some players who are truly amazing to watch and want to excel for the joy of it. I think Olbermann talked with some of his sport colleagues about these things, and we as the view spectators know better.
I'm just talking about sports... pure and simple. You can't tell me that there isn't some pleasure there. If you think it's has zero impact, you're full of shit. Ask any kid who used to listen to ball games on the radio at night when their parents thought they were in bed. Look at the face of many baby boomers today when reminiscing about those days...
Here are some examples of tribal bullshit that I see today-
Buying fashionable gear Going to tanning booths Botox, body sculpturing, breast implantations Living in "the right kind" of neighborhood Being a member of a fraternity or sorority
There are far more numbers of people who feel they need to identify with those tribes then I fear we have in team sports.

|
ESPECIALLY because Keith, the man the thread is dedicated to, is SUCH a sports fan. Do stand and object to Eulogies? Jeeze talk about making something that is supposed to be a tribute to someone loved and respected all about you. One would think that you could keep your feelings about sports to yourself just out of respect for Olbermann - who like I said above - LOVED sports. So glad you will not be at my memorial service or anywhere near me for that matter.

"You have done a great disservice by not renewing Keith Olbermann's contract - not to Olbermann, but to the ability of the nation to hear another side of the story uniquely presented within the tenets of journalism. Countdown is full of commentary and subjectivity to be sure, but it also uses sources, attribution, and the historical record to back up and document its arguments logically, factually, and sincerely.
One doesn't have to agree with that side of the story to recognize its place in journalism, which is much in opposition (and NOT a mirror image) to another network that operates within the parameters of promoting faux-journalistic fiction, gossip, and abominable inaccuracies in order to persuade the gullible and weak-minded.
MSNBC's level of trustworthiness and respectability has taken a huge hit as will, I'm sure, the ratings and financial rewards of the network. It is your loss, our loss, and the loss of another piece of honest discourse in our society."

Keith held my sanity during the Bush years and gave a voice to all of us. I looked forward to all his commentaries and cheered him on like an old cheerleader lol. Looks like Comcast is behind this although MSNBC heads sure didn't appreciate how much he means to us. Keith please find another home and we'll be there! I still can't believe this ... Hearing somebody on the TV box say the things that were going through my mind made me feel not alone and gave me hope that America wasn't the way it looked on the other channels, where nobody seemed to care that unjust things were happening.
He did a huge public service and really made a difference to a lot of people's lives. And if (maybe I'm naive but I still have hope) MSNBC keeps leaning forward, with Ed and Rachel, he will have left an amazing legacy at MSNBC.

83. I would bet even if MSNBC has a clause that would bar Keith from broadcasting |
|
He could do "personal opinion" pieces for free on YouTube. Anything to block those would be blocking his freedom of speech. I could see how any kind of subscription service, like iPod, might violate his contract terms, depending on what they are. But free, personal comments - I doubt it!
I've hated Comcast since 1975 when the bleed over from their junction box outside my apartment window blocked over the air broadcast reception. They would not provide service to the house that my apartment was in and basically told me "Tough" when I complained about the interference from their equipment.

Bless you, Mr. Olbermann for standing up to the insanity that has gripped this country and for giving liberals a voice. :loveya:

We will follow you to any place you go. Hell, I'd even sign up for satellite radio if that was the only possibility.
I will provide content for where ever your official message board ends up. olbermannunderground.com. But only if you can coexist on the internet as harmoniously as TRMS followed Countdown.

Man, look at how popular you became so fast!! I applaud you for taking yourself out of the game for the time being.
They won't be able to blame you for any hysterical jazz that takes place this year. Brilliant move, on your part, if I don't say so myself.
Let O'Reilly flounder, looking for another windmill to fight. Let Sean complain that "the left always does it, too", even when NOBODY on the left is doing whatever he is talking about. Let John Stewart make snarky remarks about Rachel, Ed, or Lawerence and paint them with a broadbrush as "on the other side", as if we weren't all on the same side, which was somehow mysteriously lost in that obtuse "line in the sand" interview with Rachel.
Then, by next January, come back with a bold, fresh outlook on life, fully rested after having enjoyed a long vacation -- yet by my count you still will not have taken as many days off of the job during your past 8 years at MSNBC, plus 1, as President Bush did during his 2 full terms in office as the President of the United States.
Boo-yah, Keith!

It has been refreshing to hear news rather than infotainment. For now I suppose that SyFy or Science Channel will have to suffice in your former time-slot.
There is no substitute for quality.
Good night and good luck. We will look for you to reappear with anticipation.

You are and always will be the standard by which all progressive media is judged. Good luck to you Keith.

We couldn't believe our EARS when the first mention of "last show" hit them. As it went to commercial break afte that, we laughed at Keith's playing with us - certain that there would be a new name for Countdown come Monday. It had to be another Olbermann prank to keep us on our toes.
But no, when KO started to talk as to the reality of it, our hearts sunk in unison - in unison with millions of others, I'm sure. For years, there's been ONE consistant event in our evening household - making sure we got our the daily dose of truth and perspective that gave us hope for what's right. I gotta say, we feel utterly rudderless for now. We LOVE Rachel, and OdOnnell, and Ed and even Cenk. But it's gonna take a while for the open wound that's Keith's departure to heal.
We LOVE you Keith Olbermann! We'll continue to do so so long as you are a standard bearer for truth.

The Left in this country needs you. It's your duty to your nation, to stand up to the people in power.
"If those in charge of our society -- politicians, corporate executives, and owners of press and television -- can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." — Howard Zinn
"Why should we cherish “objectivity”, as if ideas were innocent, as if they don’t serve one interest or another? Surely, we want to be objective if that means telling the truth as we see it, not concealing information that may be embarrassing to our point of view. But we don’t want to be objective if it means pretending that ideas don’t play a part in the social struggles of our time, that we don’t take sides in those struggles.
Indeed, it is impossible to be neutral. In a world already moving in certain directions, where wealth and power are already distributed in certain ways, neutrality means accepting the way things are now. It is a world of clashing interests – war against peace, nationalism against internationalism, equality against greed, and democracy against elitism – and it seems to me both impossible and undesirable to be neutral in those conflicts." — Howard Zinn (Declarations of Independence)

71. Keith is bigger than MSNBC he needs to go in another direction |
|
He can go on the internet, satellite radio, newspaper columnist, his own blog as Politico or Huffington Post. He could have a career exposing FAUX NEWS and right wing lies. Someone has to educate the low information voters who believe anything they are told, just because they repeat the lie enough. Msnbc is on a higher tier on TV packages and is at disadvantage to Fox because of it. I've had sirius long enough to remember when Sirius first added Msnbc, then DROPPED Msnbc, because of little interest. Then Keith built the brand Msnbc is known for today, he is responsible for Rachel being there. Sirius added Msnbc again not long ago. He has a lot of passion that has to be shared and I'm sure he will. He should spend his considerable influence on exposing the tea party stupidity right wing agenda, which is to dismantel the new deal.

this is off topic, and likely to suggest me to flame, but ...
K.O.'s visiting DU in the future will be largely dependant on his next career move. If he's doing the political commentary thing, he'll likely be back - this site provides a treasure trove of topics and material; but if he's doing something else, like sports announcing, not so much.

I hate the networks, stopped watching network news when Charlie Gibson asked presidential candidate John Kerry if he really did throw his medals over the White House fence, in 1971, implying (straight from the RNC) Kerry lied about it. Talk about yer breaking news!
I hate the cable even more! Why am I paying for hundreds of channels when I watch about ten shows? And that's a stretch.
I would subscribe to a Keith Olbermann on-line show in about a second! Can you imagine a TYT, Olbermann, Hartmann line-up?
