Sounds like there needs to be a serious boycott of Comcast.

Years ago people didn't have a choice what company to use for their television viewing. Now we do. I was with Comcast for 20+ years before dumping their a$$es when they stole money from me. Long story and I won't bore you but an employee, in their capacity of working for Comcast took $160.00 of my money and the company never investigated. That's when I switched to Dish Network and never looked back. Even years later I get weekly letters from Comcast asking for my business. Absolutely not. Never again.

Anyway if there could be a national boycott of Comcast that might get them where they live. Just switch to a satellite carrier or other companies available in your area. Much cheaper, better options and you are not dealing with the crooks at Comcast. I would love to see that merging with NBC/MSNBC become Comcast's worst nightmare.

Just a thought.

Drop the cable, drop the satellite. Go back to old school antenna. The New York Times just had an article about people doing this, saying that it's beginning to catch on a bit. A friend did it about six months ago. The economy hit her hard and she had to decide on what needed to be cut out of her budget. She chose cable at that time. (And yes, it was Comcast.) She's now quite happy with her choice, since she gets more channels than she ever expected with a cheap (under $50) antenna from Walmart. She has more channels than we'd ever thought and after a one time expense she has money at the end of the month.

She's happy with her choice and has me seriously considering it too.

7. I did that. Quality attic mounted OTA antenna + TIVO + lifetime subscription.

Flawless HD (higher quality than cable in some cases) with all the convenience of DVR.

I look at it this way:
$70 per month * 24 months = $1680 every two years.
Thats a nice vacation every other year.

Another way to look at it. Figure 47 years (18 to 65)
$70 per month, 2% price inflation, 47 years, invest the money instead @ only 6% yield = $289,942.82
Even when accounting for inflation (say 3% annually) that is $72,000+ in 2010 dollars.

Is cable really worth having a quarter million dollars less in retirement savings. Somethings are, but cable?

8. My friend lost her job.

She has two children to support and no child support. Once she found a new job it paid nearly 20 grand less than before. She had to make some choices. She chose the television.

Her kids complained until they realized that they liked the cartoons on PBS and a few local independent stations. Once, she watched all the really crappy reality shows on Mtv, Vh1,Bravo, etc. Now she says she has learned to love her PBS stations and feels like she is watching something of quality, compared to the crap of the past.

And she saves $100 a month. $1200 a year isn't too bad at all. She used some of that money to take a cheap weekend trip with the kids to St Louis and is planning another one to Little Rock on the next three day weekend. IMO, that's better than sitting at home and wasting your money on tv.

10. Priorities....

No cable available where I live...we have to have satellite if we want any kind of TV at all because of the surrounding terrain...

But the point I wanted to make about priorities was that yes...satellite is worth it.

However, Mr P and I gave up cigarettes in 1996.

I'd rather have quit smoking than not had TV...

14. There's no way to get rid of NBC by any action you take of getting rid of

Comcast. If you want to hit them, boycott advertisers of NBC Nightly News.

15. if you want to hurt them, i have a 5 point plan:

1. right now, throw your television in the garbage

2. call the cable/satellite provider and shut down their service

3. go thee to the library and devise a reading list for yourself. use your creativity. fill the gaps in your knowledge

4. get involved in your local community. seek out like-minded individuals, take action.

5. enjoy your reclaimed mental space.

moving away from television isn't easy.

i haven't owned one since 1992, but the first weeks will be fidgety and you'll wonder what to do with yourself.

after awhile you start thinking in sentences and paragraphs rather than in slogans and catchphrases.

once you incorporate some type of self-education plan, you'll start to be amazed at your focus and ability to make connections between disparate ideas and start seeing things in more than 1 dimension.

the trick is to get busy. at first it will all seem weird, but stick with it. try to do something useful for your community and others. create a side business project. read about everything you don't know.

the possibilities are endless.

plus, you disconnect yourself from the primary conduit of social control in this country. a singular, total, and completely passive activity that does nothing to improve the quality of your life.

trust me, a person does not have to be constantly entertained to get through life.
