3. It's more about Apple branding than it is about music sales. |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 10:45 PM by Occam Bandage
The Beatles are cool but classic. They're counterculture but noncontroversial. They're popular but not lowbrow. They're creative but accessible. The Beatles are everything Apple wants its brand to project.

13. LOL !!! - My First Album Was "Meet The Beatles" In 1964 |
|
Think about it it this way...
I always wondered why Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' was on Billboard's Top 100 for so many years. And don't get me wrong... one of my favorite albums. But...
A friend of mine suggested... you go out and buy the album. You fall in love with it and then...
You buy the super fidelity version of it.
You buy the 8 Track version of it.
You buy the cassette version of it.
You buy the CD version of it... on and on as the technology changes over and over.
Plus... I-Tunes let you buy one song at a time, and since the younger generations are used to this feature, and are not totally familiar with the Beatles discography... I-Tunes makes total sense for them.
And believe me... I-Tunes has figured this all out.

If you're going to pirate, don't pay someone else for the privilege, and certainly don't pay someone what it would cost to legitimately buy an album a month.

I could download them for free somewhere else and go to a lot of trouble..but again 10 bucks saves me a lot of time. If you can't afford the ten spot..then fine...work your ass off to build a library...Not me.

24. I'm A Little Confused By The Question... |
|
The Beatles were more than a rock band. What the commercial says is true (at least to me)...The Beatles changed everything.
I was not a Beatles fan. However, in my "advanced" years I've grown to understand what they meant to the world. Like it or not, there was nothing like them before and the likelihood is that there will nothing like them in the future.

and it will rip it to your Mp3 player for you.
I remember when mp3s first came out...the very first thing my friends and me all had was every Beatles song on mp3. Still have the cd and still listen to it often.

29. Lots of kids have never bought a CD, and won't buy them. |
|
So it's new to them, a whole new generation of potential fans. Removes the excuse for them to steal the music from torrent sites.
Plus, a lot of people buy on impulse, especially music. They hear a song in a movie or at a friend's house, and they want that song now. So they go to iTunes and pop the 99 cents or $1.29 or so to get the song.
And yes, I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who think the only way they can get a song into their iPod and/or iTunes is to purchase it through the iTunes Store.
Plus, I'm sure Apple is paying a premium royalty rate and probably fronted a lot of money to get the rights, so they need to "shift a lot of units" to recoup this investment and turn a profit, ergo, advertise.
And hey, when you have some of the best music ever recorded, and basically exclusive rights to sell it in a specific format, you brag. It reinforces Apple's image (and the iPod) as the premium quality leader/innovator that all the others are imitating.

37. Because the pissing contest is finally over |
|
The Beatles named the label that made their records "Apple Records." It was part of the "Apple Corp" which the Beatles also owned. There were a few other bands on Apple Records, but basically it was the conduit for releasing Beatle records, and records made by the members of that band.
In 1977, Wozniak and Jobs released their "Apple II" computer, which could generate sound. It was one of the first, if not THE first, computer that could generate sound. The Beatles members got in a big legal pissing contest and forced the Apple of the time to promise not to enter the music business.
Forward to the 21st Century. Now Apple is huge in the music business, and for many years the surviving Beatles, and later Michael Jackson, refused to allow Beatles music to be sold by Apple.
My guess is, the estate of Michael Jackson needs a shitload of money right now, and selling permission to put Beatles music on iTunes will get it for them.
