Tell Me I'm Wrong?
Edited on Sat Jan-22-11 04:38 PM by affrayer
I want your help. I want you to show me that I'm wrong. Here's what I see happening.

A bunch of republican politicians cut taxes in their states. Now that the jobs have been shipped overseas, that unfunded war in Iraq is closing down and the mortgage blow out has come and gone, the economy has taken a major nose dive. Those same states that the republicans cut taxes are now going belly up...

Cash-Strapped States Seeking A Way To Declare Bankruptcy

States are looking for relief.

As they confront massive debts and diminished revenue, some state officials are trying to determine whether they could take a drastic and illegal step: declaring bankruptcy, the New York Times reports. Such a move, though currently out of the question, might free states from some of their most burdensome debt and allow them to rebuild their crippled finances.

Now isn't this silly? The states have to raise taxes but the only ones who can afford to have their taxes raised without crushing them are the wealthy and the republicans absolutely refuse to do that. So instead the republicans are willing to flush the States down the toilet with bankruptcy.

Now am I wrong????

3. And this doesn't alarm you?
The current budget cuts on the table in the House will help DEFUND a lot of State budgets. As a one two punch this could destroy the economies of several states...

2. Sorry bud, can't help you.
Bankrupting the state, and the states, is part of the plan.

5. Republicans Have A Plan?
Seriously, republicans have only one plan, rape the taxpayers and suck up the profits.

Are you saying they have figured out a way to increase their wealth through forcing the States into bankruptcy?

12. Extreme financial pressure from strict budget control
leads to the elimination and privatization of public services. Elimination of public services is part of the ideology necessary to lower taxes for the wealthy. Privatization is a way to suck more money out of the system.

The plan is actually fairly simple. We've just heard so many times that if we think the other side is using any kind of strategy at all, we're crazy conspiracy theorists, that we may tend not to see these things. But as far as plans go, it's a very simple one that even a simple-minded trust fund baby can understand.

They want to eviscerate everything that stands in their way from raping the country. Pensions are just one of the many things they can't wait to get their grimy hands on...

Take public lands which the House republicans are already planning to sell off to themselves for pennies on the dollar.

9. I now assume Republicans are trying to utterly crush the econmy...
At one time, I thought they just held a religioeconomic belief in a system where you get everything for nothing and unleashed the awesome power of unregulated Capitalism.

However, since everything they do turns to shit, and they continue to do it anyway, I have come to conclude it is their choice to utterly Crush the U.S. Economy.

I have no idea why, but that is their clear goal.

10. I truly wish I could tell you that you are wrong.
I also wish I could understand the thought process of the Repugs. Bankruptcy of states will do so much damage, mostly to small investors in bonds and small businesses who depend on government contracts. (Note how it is always the "small" people and businesses who are really hurt). So they tell us they are for business and energizing the economy and bringing jobs back so the economy will grow, then they come up with these brilliant ideas. Go figure.

13. You are wrong if you think this is silly.
They are going after the pensions of state workers. To do that they must claim bankruptcy. To do that they must first run their states into bankruptcy.

Nothing silly about it, evil maybe but not silly.

15. You are right and this crazy shit has to end!!!
In a country or a state taxes pay the bills. WTF has happened to people and the thought of community and statehood and nationalhood. This right wing shit is crazy off the chart thinking. It sells but does not work.

16. Now comes the war on government workers...
police, teachers, utility workers, dept. of corrections, foster care system, etc.

You tell me which of these workers is not middle class?? They have made it clear they are not only after active workers and their salaries/benefits but also the RETIRED workers' pensions and medical benefits.

They won't be satisfied until the entire middle class is completely GUTTED.

17. They want Bankruptcy because they (the States) can get out
from under Pension Obligations.

Remember how the Auto Companies in Bankruptcy got out
from under the old union committments and negoatiated
new Lower Salaries, readjusted Pensions etc.

Same deal. Republicans want Bankruptcy to get rid of
old Pension obligation and renegotiate new ones--cheaper.

18. Who owns their bonds?
Unless Treasury is going to bail out the "too big to fail" states - and it's doubtful there's any money left in the Treasury, at this point - I don't think they'll be allowed to default.
