Neb. bill bans open alcohol containers in boats

Associated Press - January 20, 2011 5:15 AM ET

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Open containers of alcohol are not allowed in motor vehicles in Nebraska. Now, one lawmaker is seeking to outlaw open containers in boats and other watercraft, too.

State Sen. John Harms of Scottsbluff introduced the bill Wednesday, on the last day of bill introduction in this legislative session.

The bill would make it unlawful for any person in or on a vessel, motorboat or personal watercraft to possess an open alcoholic beverage container on Nebraska waters while the vessel is under way.

One exception would be opened, but resealed bottles of wine, as long as the wine is in an area or compartment not readily accessible to the driver.

1. Next Thing You Know..
Oh. My. God.

The next thing you know, they will try to require every boat in Nebraska to have life preservers for everyone on board.

Honestly!

(Do they even have boats in Nebraska?)

3. Next thing you know
They will not ban bottles of alcohol that have screw on caps (Funny how wine is almost always excepted from these types of regulations, maybe because the wealthy buy such things and want exemptions - and does this cover yachts or just smaller boats)?

5. Darn, you beat me to it! My question exactly--they have boats in Nebraska?
Maybe they anchor them in the Sandhills? I'm jokin', folks. I've been to Nebraska, almost married a farmer there many years ago, but in all my travels I never once saw anything that would float a boat. Guess it's Google time for me!

Peace and blessings.

4. Not readily accessible to the driver? That ruins it for me.
I like to get a box of wine, take the bag out and poke a straw in it, like a grown up Capri Sun.:)

10. not readily accessible to the driver??????
I've been a sailor for many years, and have been called many things. Some of them have not been so nice. But I have never been called "the driver". Not too many sailboats in Nebraska? Just wondering.

I don't drink alcohol, but have participated in many "casual" regattas and raft-ups that included adult beverages. I wonder if the proposed law applies to sailboats and houseboats, boats at anchor, boats at the dock, just boats underway, etc?
