Burlington H.S. bans backpacks

BURLINGTON - Burlington High School students on Wednesday saw more police and fewer backpacks than usual, sights that will continue at the school Thursday because of threats found on a school bathroom stall.

Custodians at the school found concerning writing on a boy's bathroom stall last week, a discovery that led to an ongoing district and police investigation and to increased security measures including a temporary backpack ban and increased police presence, said Dave Moyer, Burlington superintendent.

School officials are not releasing exactly what the bathroom writing said but an e-mail sent Tuesday to parents explained the writing "implied harm would be done to others" though it was not a bomb threat or hit list.

"Right now we don't believe anybody's in any imminent danger but, that said, we want to make sure we provide a safe environment," Moyer said. That's why the school, at 400 McCanna Parkway, requested students leave backpacks at home Wednesday and Thursday, and increased school police. The high school usually has one police officer on site and more have been added though Moyer would not say how many.
