DU this CBS POLL: Should President Obama call for changes to Social Security?
The results are already going the right direction, but it takes near unanimous public opposition to get DC to hear us over the cash registers in the heads totaling up the money they will make carrying water for Wall St. instead of taking care of the people who voted for them.

17. The problem I see with that poll
is that it only asks "Should President Obama call for changes to Social Security".

I personally, think he should "call for changes" - such as raising the cap for payments, or eliminating it altogether, and maybe calling for means testing. Those are changes. I cannot answer no in that poll, 'cause I think he should call for those changes.

2. And how does cutting Social Security reduce the government deficit?

This is a lying propaganda line that is repeated in the CBS poll and now by most politicians in Washington.

20. That's something we all agree on, but I don't think that remedy alone
was implied in the article.

9. as worded, the alternative is worse: change to reduce the deficit
the two are unrelated since SS has a separate tax and runs a surplus.

8. A progressive group is running an ad in SC against Lindsey Graham...
(...)The ad features a 59-year-old South Carolina woman who deals with chronic pain after working in a library and carrying books for years.

"I'm in pain every day at work," the woman says. "I have a torn rotator cuff from carrying books. My hands have been numb at work... At 59, I'm just trying to make it until I can retire at 62."

The ad targets the proposal -- endorsed by Republicans like Graham, some Democrats, and the president's deficit commission -- to raise the retirement age and thus start paying out Social Security benefits to workers later in life.

"When Lindsey Graham supports raising the retirement age for people across South Carolina, including those whose jobs take a physical toll on their bodies, that shows that he's a fundamentally out-of-touch politician," PCCC co-founder Stephanie Taylor said in a statement. "We hope President Obama will strongly pressure Republicans on this issue during his State of the Union address."

10. great find. It should be a national progessive ad campaign, aimed at blue dogs & DLCers as well
unfortunately, they side with the GOP on this.

11. I voted no, but one change I do favor very much
That is, lift (even if only gradually) the earnings cap on FICA taxes. It would shore up the system permanently, and why should someone making 1 million $ pay a smaller percentage of his income than someone who makes $50,000.

As I recall, the so-called "Catfood" Commission actually favored raising, but not eliminating, the earnings cap.

16. Not enough options
I want to vote for lowering SS age, raising benefits, eliminating the cap, and probably a few other things. I.e., a "Strengthen SS" option.
