Seven reasons why the GOP faces an uphill battle to defeat Obama

By Bob Cusack - 01/23/11 02:00 PM ET

President Obama’s chances of winning a second term have significantly improved over the past couple of months.

The election is a long way off, but the strategy sessions for Obama’s reelection are already under way. Some of the president’s senior aides, including David Axelrod, will soon be leaving Washington for Chicago to focus on one thing: making Obama a two-term president.

1. Reminds me of 1995
I knew a month after the Republicans took Congress that Clinton's re-election was assured.

6. I remember that well.
President Clinton triangulated the Republicans straight into Newt Gingrich's evil, incapable hands, and by the end of the year the GOP had managed to enrage virtually everyone in DC by shutting the government down, while President Clinton hovered above it all and laughed.

That wrecked Bob Dole's reputation just before his Presidential bid, and opened the door for Ross Perot to wander back in and shave a crucial 8 million votes from Dole. He never had a chance.

For the same reason, every Republican hopeful unlucky enough to have a job in Congress is going to be persona non grata one year from now, which will further shift the focus onto the looney bin and Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, and Palin, none of whom has a snowball's chance of winning against President Obama.

I think I see the President has already shifted his efforts to growing his coattails, suggesting that the unusual Republican gains in Congress in 1996 will not be allowed to be repeated.

2. Just wait until they try to impeach him.
I have zero doubt it will be attempted.

3. They're going to go with the citizenship issue, I bet.

5. Man, I hope they do
because most people aren't insane enough to actually believe any of that nonsense and will rally more sympathy for President Obama. Maybe even some of the sensible *adult* Republicans will have to start speaking out more. Plus, while the birthers are busy chasing their tails about it, we'll be avoiding them doing other worse things for the country.

7. Nah, they're smart enough to know that's not a real issue.
They still bring it up because they know the viewers will fall for it, but they all know the truth exists even if they don't admit it publicly.

8. It all depends on whether the inmates are running the asylum or not.

I never thought they'd impeach Clinton on such pathetic grounds either.

4. Don't be so sure
Some of them seem to believe that they can take the economy to the brink of the abyss again but "do it better" this time around (whereby President Obama gets the blame for a shutdown, not them). Sans hearings (and proof), Issa has already declared the Obama Administration to be the most corrupt in history. He, of course, had to walk back his outlandish claims but now that that's out there, he's either going to have to trump up a big juicy bone for the teabaggers to chew on or he's going to look like a bigger idiot than he already does. :eyes:
