Americans Face Guantanamo-Like Torture Everyday in a Super-Max Prison Near You
http://www.alternet.org/rights/149233/americans_face_guantanamo-like_torture_everyday_in_a_super-max_prison_near_you/

To little public outcry, tens of thousands of citizens are being held in horrific conditions in super-harsh, super-maximum security, solitary-confinement prisons.

Editor's Note: Courageous WikiLeaks whistleblower Bradley Manning is reportedly suffering some of the same horrible experiences detailed in the article below, including 23 hours a day of solitary confinement, which has been labeled torture by numerous prison and psychological experts.

“They beat the shit out of you,” Mike James said, hunched near the smeared plexiglass separating us. He was talking about the cell “extractions” he’d endured at the hands of the supermax-unit guards at the Maine State Prison.

“They push you, knee you, poke you,” he said, his voice faint but ardent through the speaker. “They slam your head against the wall and drop you on the floor while you’re cuffed.” He lifted his manacled hands to a scar on his chin. “They split it wide open. They’re yelling ‘Stop resisting! Stop resisting!’ when you’re not even moving.”

When you meet Mike James you notice first his deep-set eyes and the many scars on his shaved head, including a deep, horizontal gash. He got that by scraping his head on the cell door slot, which guards use to pass in food trays.

For a very good reason .....They chose poorly.....they will be just fine. I am satisfied with their confinement.

If I could unrec your post, I would. And I'm speaking as an activist who has visited many prisons, read many thousands of letters from prisoners, and studied the issue at length. I suppose you think that makes me a "bleeding heart". No. It makes me enlightened. The torture of people in America's prisons is despicable and not worthy of our stated ideals.

5. Prisoners lie, manipulation is the norm.
No one gets to Super Max being a victim....it is the inmates of Super Max who all have an extensive, violent history with future design to continue such violence. They are just fine...

10. who is? Every person in the prison system?
If so, I think that's a wildly broad and incorrect label to apply generally to the US prison population.

11. right. most people in prison are there for smoking pot. obviously a habit of pure sociopaths.
you want sociopaths? check out the leaders of congress & most corporations.

you are to them as third world people are to you -- not someone who needs to be consulted while they jerk you around.

23. No
what I said was that if I were insulting you, you'd know it. As far as aggressive sides go, your posts further up seem to show that *you* have the dark, negative and aggressive side. A certain inexplicable hatred for folks you don't know and know nothing about. A wish for broad brush suffering.

Who's the sociopath? Oh, right...everyone in prison. Got it.

Me...stand down. You must be new.

Not every prisoner....go back and read the thread... Apparently you have difficulty with anothers opinion wherein sympathy for Super Max inmates does not embrace your opinion...it happens. An no, I am not new...another misconception and assumption on your part....

deserves the highest level of suffering? They are all sociopaths according to you, Frist? Careful how you answer that...

27. Even if these are the scum of the earth.....Abusing people is a crime.
What's the point of the entire "justice system," if they are put in jail for doing what is being done to them in jail?

It's the absurdest nightmare, black is white and up is down.
