‘No Journalistic Standards’: David Shuster Slams Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity And Glenn Beck On CNN

The ongoing controversy regarding Keith Olbermann’s abrupt exit from MSNBC was the main topic of discussion today on CNN’s Reliable Sources. Columnist for the Baltimore Sun, David Zurawik and former MSNBC anchor David Shuster not only debated the merits of Olbermann as a television host, but also the journalistic standards of both Fox News and MSNBC.

Zurawik argued that despite Olbermann considering himself to be doing work similar to that of Edward R. Murrow, he was actually more in line with Joe McCarthy given that he alleged Olbermann had a habit of attempting to assassinate people’s character without any facts. Shuster strongly defended Olbermann as a poetic and passionate voice for the left who will sorely be missed until he resurfaces. From there, Zurawik predicted that Rachel Maddow and everyone else on MSNBC will immediately begin to dial it back as NBC news tries to restore some journalistic standards to MSNBC.

That suggestion however got Shuster very excited as he then echoed the repeated controversial claims that some have been inspired by Glenn Beck to carry out acts of violence and asserted:

“There are no journalistic standards on many of these shows on Fox News, with the exception of a couple of news shows, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, they don’t even attempt to subscribe to the journalistic principles that were attempted throughout the MSNBC schedule.”

Earlier, Zurawik was at least eager to defend O’Reilly and unlink him from any potential ties to violence:

“To say that Bill O’Reilly – who has been much more reasonable in the last year than Keith Olbermann ever was on the air – much more responsible, to try to pin that on Bill O’Reilly – link him to that, is outrageous.”

Shuster’s fearless critique of fellow cable newsers surely reminds his fans why they liked him, and with these attacks on Fox and being finished with MSNBC, might his next appearance on CNN be on a more permanent basis?

4. I think you misread the article it was Schuster that said.......

8. Yes, but he said it on CNN..
Which is a sub-category of the groups he's talking about, and since he doesn't mention CNN in his arugment, it is implied that CNN has some type of standard, which of course they don't.

3. Zurawik's claim that Olbermann lacks "journalistic standards" is baseless and vile.
He has no evidence to support that slander, and that's why he offered none.

6. Or that Rachel Maddow might even consider "dialing it back".
Rachel Maddow is one of the smartest people in this country, and she doesn't open her mouth without having a comprehensive knowledge of what she's talking about.

Same reason few RWers, no Tea Baggers and few "pundints" will EVER go on her show.

11. He OBVIOUSLY never got over being one of the "worst persons"
I thought he himself was vile & has no journalistic objectivity. His "watch the others dial it back" tells you where he's coming from - that's what HE wants. First time I've ever seen this man and he's obviously a right-winger who is uncomfortable with the truth.

7. "Tiller the Baby Killer" ~ Bill O’Reilly
George Tiller was a private citizen.

To suggest there is any comparison between "worst persons" and "X kills babies" is reprehensible.

9. Zurawik is exhibiting classic projection.
Fox "assassinates people's character without any facts." In fact, they try to ASSASSINATE people, period. BlecKKK (sic), O'Lielly (sic) and InSannity (sic) are the McCarthys of the 21st century.

12. Really! He says Keith was "over the top"! He needs to get a clue: Keith has
something that's rare in the media these days called "integrity", & while he's calling out the reich-wing's complete distortions of the "facts", he might seem angry because HE IS. Anyone who ISN'T angry at the reich wing lies is morally bankrupt.

10. I gave up on CNN as they led the cheers during the Iraq invasion.
The idea that they care about anything but buttering up the status quo is a delusion. This guy calling Olbermann a McCarthyite in the face of what Fox's Beck, Hannity and O'Reilly have done would be laughable, if it weren't such classic doublespeak.

Instead, it's infuriating. The days of CNN having a shred of neutrality ended shortly after Ted Turner sold the place off. It stinks big time.

MSNBC stinks just as much and now they've moved Ed and Cenk to the later spots to make sure no one hears any plain-talking, progressive men speaking on any subject whatsoever.

:argh:

Okay, I won't throw my computer across the world. Sometimes I think you folks are my only remaining link to sanity in this entire media nightmare.
