Bills to show women sonograms before abortions become priority in Texas

Gov. Rick Perry has fast-tracked legislation that requires physicians to show women a sonogram before they have an abortion.

Perry this weekend added the issue to his list of emergency items, giving lawmakers the ability to consider such bills in the first 30 days of the session.

“When you consider the magnitude of the decision to have an abortion, ensuring that the patient understands what’s truly at stake seems a small step to take,” Perry said in a statement. “When someone has all the information, the right choice – the choice of life – becomes clear. Now our legislature can take fast action on this important bill because we all know when it comes to saving lives, every second counts.”

The list of emergency item this session has now grown to five. Other emergency items that Perry has set include establishing tougher eminent domain laws, abolishing sanctuary cities for undocumented immigrants, requiring voters to present a photo identification at the polls and calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would require the federal government to have a balanced budget.

The state faces a budget shortfall of between $15 and $27 billion. Critics have questioned the governor's selection of such emergency items at a time when public education, higher education and health care are facing deep cuts.

9. . . . and at the expense of the babies/children the women know
they can't afford to raise decently.

I can't believe these guys who knock themselves out obstructing women who are trying to be responsible for their reproductive lives.

In Iowa the Puglies are trying to cut back both on birth control services for low-income women AND on preschool education for kids.

I think they haven't yet drafted a bill approving daily beatings for the developmentally disabled, but there's probably one in the works.

Meanwhile our new Republican Governor has hired hisself a personal chef.

44. "Constitutional amendment" is Texan for "passin a law"
The Texas constitution is a bulky, rigid, formidable document that takes up an entire bookshelf. The way things are set up, to do practically anything legislatively requires an amendment to the dang thing.

Gotta figure that's no surprise for a state where the governor is about number six in the power hierarchy, and it's actually the lieutenant governor who runs the joint. If indeed, anyone can be said to be actually running it.

FORT WORTH - In a ceremony filled with religious references, Gov. Rick Perry signed a bill at a church school gymnasium Sunday that imposes more limits on late-term abortions and requires minors to get written parental consent for abortions.

"And it has been a tragedy of unspeakable consequences that for decades activist courts denied many Texas parents their right to be involved in one of the most important decisions their young daughter could ever make — whether to end the life that was growing inside her," Perry told a crowd of about 1,000 people gathered at Calvary Christian Academy. "For too long, a blind eye has been turned to the rights of our most vulnerable human beings — that's the unborn in our society."

13. The Lege just zeroed funding
for those phoney-baloney "crisis pregnancy" centers (funding that was diverted from TANF, BTW). One of the few procedures they actually did was provide sonograms.

Perry's looking for a way to make their services a "necessary" part of the budget.

that fetus-turned-child is hungry & needs the other basic neccessities of life?

Or is he going to tell those wimmens that they're on their own; no gubmint help for raisin' those children he's pressuring them to keep?

It's okay for him to interfere with such a personal decision, but don't go running back to him when you need help as a result of his interference.

47. Rural Texas is crimson
through and through.

Most of the larger cities are blue or purple...but there are enough firebreathing, racist teabaggers to offset any progress that can be made.

To top it off--there is a BLACK POTUS. That is enough to bring every one of them out from under their rocks to elect more of the same.

I wish I could say that Perry is an abberance. Sadly, he isn't.

29. It's more invasive than you might think:
Transvaginal Scans: Specially designed probe transducers are used inside the vagina to generate sonogram images. Most often used during the early stages of pregnancy.

What if the woman refuses to let them tough her, moves around so the sonogram is ruined or just plain refuses to look?

Will the woman have her right to refuse the procedure taken away?

but as soon as they show any sign of independent thought? Then they get punished.

Their 'love' of life is completely conditional upon compliance with their worldview. This kind of love is not even love, isn't it called cathexis?

When do we begin making legislators and those who vote for war look at pictures of maimed, dead children, and bombed out schools and decimated homes where old people used to live and crying fathers and grieving wives?

When in the fuck do we make MEN look at the consequences of their actions?
