Dirtbag estranged husband of $190M lotto winner: "That's awesome! I won't have to pay child support"
It seemed like a feel-good story ripped from the pages of a Hollywood script: A struggling single mother from Idaho won a $190 million Mega Millions jackpot.

But since Holly Lahti, 29, struck it rich on Jan. 4, her uplifting tale has quickly unraveled.

Lahti, who was assaulted by her husband in 2003, has vanished, and her estranged hubby is now mounting a legal battle to claim a portion of her fortune.

Lahti's husband, Josh Lahti, broadcast his motives when he was contacted by a reporter last week. "That's awesome!" Josh Lahti crowed to The Associated Press. "I won't have to pay child support"...

4. Well, this story just stopped me from ever buying a lottery ticket again.
I buy one once in a while. Never again.

6. I would split it with him...
Edited on Sun Jan-23-11 11:41 PM by Contrary1
Providing he agreed to give up any parental rights to the kids, and also agreed to stay out of their lives until they were 21. I would then change my name along with the children's, and move as far away from him as possible.

Unfortunately, this moron probably has a case to get half of it, and if it goes to court, the lawyers will make out like bandits.

Too bad this young lady didn't have a parent or sibling claim the jackpot.

8. I wonder if he ever had paid child support
If they have been separated for a period of time maybe she won't have to cut him in. If she had received an inheritance he would not entitled to that either. Now, she has money to hire a really good attorney and a body guard who could kick his ass if he tried to harm her or cause problems.

16. You find that amusing?
That an abusive ex who didn't want to support his own kids would get money from her is a good thing?

If you had an ex who had abused you, and who refused to pay you what was owed to you and your child that you were raising, if you later came into money would you want to be forced to turn over money to that ex?

20. From what I read of the story, it sounds like they like to beat on each other.
Hopefully, some day they will both grow up, see the error of their ways and the kids won't have to visit dad living in a hovel.

10. According to this article she could claim the money as hers,
since they've been separated for so long.

"But while the lottery winnings are almost certainly community property, Josh Lahti should not expect a huge windfall, Brandt said.

Holly Lahti can still file for divorce, and contend the winnings are all hers because the couple do not live together and do not support each other, Brandt said. A divorce does not automatically produce a 50-50 split of assets. "

17. Good.
I'm a firm believer that abusive guys who refuse to pay their obligations should not be rewarded for it.

If he was the one who won the lottery he would be fighting tooth and nail to keep her from getting a penny of it. She certainly has the right to do the same, and has far more moral and ethical justification for doing it.

13. But not legally separated.
So he could be entitled to part of the money, no doubt he would have no shortage of lawyers taking up his case.

18. UnRec (while I still can)
These trainwreck threads always end up making DU look stupid

If a wealthy woman won a lottery and her wealthy estranged husband said he'd no longer have to pay child support, everyone would titter with amusement.

This point & stare at the 'lower classes' stuff suckz

19. Hey, which photo shows the holy Sacramental nature of all
straight people? I mean, the President claims all straight couples are in his words 'Sanctified by God' and superior to same sex couples, so much so that he claims we must never, ever have rights equal to the Lahtis. They are more worthy. Their union was crafted by the Hand of God, and the holy nature of this union must be defended against the horror that is Rachel Maddow. That Maddow, she's scum, and Mr Lahti, he's Sanctifed by God.
I hope that straight folks know that when they spew about being Sanctified and all, we think of the photo to the left. Sacramental? Or just mental?

22. Someone needs to remind him
that child support is based on income of the noncustodial parent and the income of the custodial parent has nothing to do with it. So he gets half the winning a percentage of that would then go for child support. If she gets a good lawyer they will be able to buy him off. Give him a quarter million, put a few million in trust for each child and tell him to get lost.
