Village of Fairport Harbor, Ohio evacuated
Crews battle Fairport Harbor fires

Residents in the Village of Fairport Harbor in Lake County were evacuated from their homes Monday morning because of multiple fires and gas leaks.

There were numerous fires and gas leaks in the town, fire officials confirmed, and crews have battled fires since about 7:30 a.m.

The entire village was being evacuated, and fire crews from about a dozen local cities responded to the scene. Residents are being told they can take shelter at a nearby senior center, at 1380 East Street, and buses are transporting residents to safety.

<snip>

The fires were caused by an over-pressurization of a gas line, fire officials said, and the first call came in around 7:00 a.m., after a home explosion led to several fires. Crews shut off gas lines to the entire community, which has about 3,000 people.

4. Over Pressurization
can be caused by either a human error or a mechanical problem or some combo thereof. In any case, it's mud on the face of the gas company. Hope that most people are inconvenienced only and don't lose everything.

6. San Bruno was a mechanical problem. Bad welds. So they say.
Definitely mud in the face of the gas company. And lawsuits.

3. HOLY. SHIT. I grew up in the very next town and that's
where my stepdad taught high school for so many years. It's a neat little town right on Lake Erie. I live out of state now, but I gotta call my mom and ask what the hell is going on.

7. Well, taxes in this case
are not the problem. The problem is corporations skimping on maintenance to "maximize shareholder value". Then, when they get sued over shit like this, they whine about frivolous lawsuits and their pet legislators pass laws to limit liability.

On second thought, their i sone part of the "cut taxes" mantra that IS at fault. When municiple budgets are cut, the first thing to go are safety inspectors who work for the government. The job is then either "outsourced" to the companies themselves, or the jobs are simply cut and there are no inspections at all.
