DirecTV customers may get refunds over deceptive ads

DirecTV customers who believe they were misled by the satellite service's sales pitches or terms may be able to cash in on a national settlement reached over deceptive advertising complaints.

The company said it has signed agreements with consumer protection authorities in all 50 states.

The agreements call for DirecTV to pay a total of $13.25 million to settle claims it "engaged in deceptive and unfair sales practices," the Pennsylvania attorney general's office said in a statement Wednesday.

Pennsylvania will receive $605,000 to cover costs of its investigation and for future public protection efforts.

The multistate investigation focused on claims that DirecTV did not clearly disclose prices and commitment terms; enrolled customers in additional contracts or contract terms without clearly disclosing those terms; did not disclose that seasonal sports packages would be renewed automatically; and provided bill credits instead of promised cash back.
