Rights group’s report on immigration focuses on Kobach

TOPEKA | A new Southern Poverty Law Center report criticizing attempts by states and cities to crack down on illegal immigration focuses on Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

The report, released Monday, is titled in part, “When Mr. Kobach Comes to Town.”

Kobach, a Republican from the Kansas City area, took office two weeks ago. He has advised cities and states on how to attack illegal immigration and helped draft a controversial immigration law that Arizona enacted last year.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala., argues in its report that such policies spark expensive court fights and are damaging to communities.
