Indications today suggest that Obama will not endorse cuts to Medicare or Social Security or a higher retirement age as the WP and the HP have said here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/24/white-house-social-security-cuts_n_813329.htmlThat is very good news. But if Paul Ryan and his teabagging deficit fanatics persist in demanding cuts to Medicare or Social Security or a higher retirement age, Obama should embrace the fight. Obama lost the senior citizen vote in 2008 and he only split the Baby Boomer generation vote too. His strength was and remains voters under 45. A full scale brawl over Social Security and Medicare could earn Obama much favor among voters in these age brackets. Not just the seniors, but the near seniors who get understandably nervous when politicians start yapping about raising the retirement age. If he followed this course he would win Florida by double digits.
Unfortunately, embracing fights is not something that we tend to see a whole lot of with Barack Obama. I hope he is smart enough to embrace the fight if it presents itself.
