Vote NO on Reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act

until it is amended to add strong protections for civil liberties: Section 215 orders allowing authorities to seize any tangible thing must require the government to show at least some evidence supporting individualized suspicion that justifies subjecting their targets to such extraordinary powers. The kinds of personal information to which National Security Letters allow the government access without the approval of an impartial judge should be limited. And investigators using roving wiretaps should be required to specify either the person or the device being targeted to protect the privacy of innocent people.


Reign in the FBI and COINTELPRO 2.0: Congress must conduct more careful oversight, encourage the Attorney General to issue new FBI guidelines to fix the current policy’s faults, and insist on new leadership at the Bureau after Director Mueller’s term expires later this year. New Attorney General’s Guidelines for the FBI must prevent the Bureau from investigating innocent Americans without any evidence or even suspicion of a crime; or profiling based on race, ethnicity, religion or political belief.

Cut Spending: When addressing the bloated federal budget, start with wasteful programs justified in the name of national security that offend both fiscal conservatism and constitutional rights, like TSA’s ineffective and offensive bodyscanners, or the dozens of redundant fusion centers funded by cash-strapped states and DHS.
