Government Admits Brig Commander Improperly Put Bradley Manning on Suicide Watch

By: emptywheel Monday January 24, 2011 5:15 p.m.

The government has admitted to MSNBC that the Brig Commander at Quantico improperly put Bradley Manning on suicide watch last week.

The officials told NBC News, however, that a U.S. Marine commander did violate procedure when he placed Manning on “suicide watch” last week.

Military officials said Brig Commander James Averhart did not have the authority to place Manning on suicide watch for two days last week, and that only medical personnel are allowed to make that call.

The rest of the article describes that the government has been unable to link Manning to Julian Assange. Maybe that’s why they took his glasses away.

Update: This certainly puts the events from Quantico yesterday in a different light...

2. They punished Brad for the rally his supporters held last week
by putting him on "suicide watch" against his doctor's advice.

And the message seems to be, if you make any noise in support of Brad Manning, we'll just abuse him more.

That's what we're up against.

11. But does Habeas still apply in the UCMJ?
I was under the impression that Habeas protections were applied universally.

12. As a principle, yes...
In practice, it can be hard to gain leverage to bring it to bear.

"The official said that after Manning had allegedly failed to follow orders from his Marine guards."

He probably failed to answer one of the prompts they require him to respond to hourly all night every night.

There seem to be quite a few people here who have no idea of his conditions or how long he's been under them. So in case it helps, pls know he's been in solitary for over 7.5 months now, contrary to medical assessments of whether it was warranted; and for more details about the particulars, pls read this: http://my.firedoglake.com/blog/2010/12/23/bradley-manning-speaks-about-his-conditions/

9. What does 'suicide watch' entail exactly?
Was this implemented because it is being utilized as a punitive measure, or was this out of genuine medical attention?
