Teabaggers call for government shutdown
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 09:17 AM by marmar

from Mother Jones:

Tea party activists have had much be angry about in recent weeks, after discovering their success in the midterm elections wasn't yielding them any immediate power on Capitol Hill. They've lost every fight they've weighed in on during the lame duck session of Congress, including GOP elections for key committee posts, the passage of a food safety bill, and most likely, the Obama tax cut plan. Undaunted, they are now getting fired up for one last battle before hunkering down to wrap Christmas presents, and this one is a whopper. Tea partiers want to end the year with a government shutdown.

As Congress this week attempts to pass an omnibus spending bill that would fund the federal government for another year, tea partiers are demanding that the GOP refuse to vote for the bill until it is stripped of earmarks, even if that means closing the Washington Monument and infuriating millions of seniors reliant on Social Security. The spending bill is loaded up with 6,000 earmarks, totaling about $8 billion. This is only .72 percent of the $1.1 trillion measure, but these earmarks send gobs of federal money to various members of Congress's home districts for such things as harbor dredging, grape virus research, and infrastructure repairs.

Earmarks are anathema to tea partiers. When leading tea partiers drafted a "Contract from America" this summer in an attempt to get members of Congress to pledge fealty to their agenda, an earmark ban was high on the list. The tea partiers were somewhat shocked that Republicans who claimed to be tea party supporters refused to sign the contract, primarily because of the earmark measure. That's when these conservative activists seemed to discover for the first time that Republicans love earmarks as much as the average Democrat. Since then, some Republicans have come around and disavowed earmarks, even if they haven't actually withdrawn their requests in the omnibus bill. But that's not enough for the tea partiers. They want a show of force over the issue, and they don't care if that means the federal government grinds to a halt until the issue is resolved. ..........(more)

3. The teabaggers are nothing but racist repukes who will disagree
with President Obama on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING he does (not unlike most here!).

don't let them fool you. They are ONLY PISSED because the repukes compromised with the President. They wanted to shut the government down and blame it on the President and it didn't happen. IDIOTS!

4. Watch your language, please
Some of them are racist, some of them are this or that. But there's no need to insult people. And some of them are just tired of government deficits. Quite a few are strict constitutionalists, and some are libertarians. It's a mixed bag.

8. No need to insult people? You obviosly weren't around
during the Bush administration. Let's see we were called, traitors, appeasers, terrorists, terrorist sympathizers, scum, liberals, hippies, America haters and any other thing they could come up with.

No need to insult? Yeah they are people just like us... Except this is what they think and feel, and don't tell me it's only a few bad apples, you throw yourself in with this lot you get what you deserve...

Yeah... keep talkin...

9. It was not the D's that caused deficit spending, that started with Reagan
and has been a result of the R trickle down nonsense that giving the wealthy tax breaks while expanding military spending would somehow balance the budget. Never mind the fact that deficit spending and cries from the R's to balance the budget only matter when R's are not in charge, in fact when they charge and spend they claim deficits don't matter. So yes, the ones calling for a government shut down are ignorant nit wits who have no grasp of politics nor anything else. They are only interested in trying to stop minorities from getting the same help they receive, which is racism at it's best.

12. Strict constitutionalism first requires reading the Constitution
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 10:13 AM by tridim
I have yet to see any evidence that any teabagger has read it. Perhaps you know one?

16. Greater-than-fringe examples of racism aside,
My problem with pretty much all of them is their love of all things Trickle-Down, Corporate and Reaganomics, thinking they're beneficiaries of stupid policy when they're all getting screwed and don't even realize it.

Yeah, they hate government spending, while at the same time, support the Pentagon and the illegal occupations it conducts. A large amount of discretionary spending goes towards that hole.

Here's another problem - where were the "Restoring Honor" and "9/12" rallies when we had a Republican president who doubled the National Debt?

20. Exactly! They will bitch about everything President Obama does
and the moment a repuke is in the white house (which will probably be 2012 since the left has has joined the right in constantly attacking the President for his entire 1.85 years in office), they will "magically" disappear, regardless of the repukes spending or deficit problems.

RACIST ASSHOLES!!

6. Go ahead, shut down the government.
That worked real well for Newt fat boy and got Clinton reelected.

If they shut down the government, they will guarantee a Democratic Senate for years to come.

But I'm sure Obama will step in and compromise with RepubliCONS. You know, like, "Don't shut the government down oh please, please, please. I'll destroy Social Security for you. I'll cut the rich taxes down to 5%. I'll start workhouses and poor house. I'll make sure the Middle Class and poor are required to inherit debt. Just please don't shut down the government."

7. Reid should not give in to a "temporary" bill to keep gov't going until Feb. Let them shut it down.
They are the ones that will look like fools.

I wish, for once, Dems would grow a spine and show that they will not be bullied.
