Genny Cream Ale turns 50
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 09:49 AM by wilt the stilt
For everyone who is from or spent time in Western NY. This is a special that all of us who attended college)and maybe drank a little of this or perhaps bought a keg of this unique beer(LOL). If anyone went to Brockport(Stan Van Gundy and Oliver North). Remember the Roxbury.

Genny Cream Ale Turns 50

Celebrate Genesee Cream Ale’s 50th anniversary this Saturday, December 18 at Buffalo-area Consumer’s Beverages. To commemorate this half-century milestone, 10 select stores will have an anniversary tasting with Genesee Cream Ale on tap at the growler* filling stations.

The Genesee Brewing Company introduced Genesee Cream Ale in 1960. Commonly known as “Cream Ale,” the beer was innovative for its time. It was one of the first beers to blend the smoothness of a lager and the flavor of an ale, creating a new beer style in the industry. Fermented at higher temperatures, aged longer and brewed with a special top-fermenting yeast, Genesee’s brewmasters take the extra step of kraesening, which produces natural carbonation, resulting in a true ale with an exceptionally smooth flavor.

“Genesee Cream Ale has a rich history in Western New York. At one time, it was one of the most popular beers here, known for its great taste,” said Janine Schoos, brand manager for Genesee. “After the Bills scored their first win this season, an ESPN announcer gave a nod to Genny’s Buffalo roots.” Click here to watch: ESPN Clip

Genesee Cream Ale has won numerous awards for its taste and unique style. It’s known as an American original and first earned recognition in the beer industry in 1987: winning a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival. Since then, Genesee Cream Ale has gone on to win two gold, four silver and three bronze medals at the GABF. Genesee Cream Ale was also awarded a silver medal in 1998 at the World Beer Cup, and went on to win the gold medal four years later.

“We’re excited that with Consumer’s Beverages, a premier beer retailer, chose to feature Genesee Cream Ale,” said Schoos. “There is renewed interest in retro beers and Genesee Cream Ale has recently developed a following in cities like Brooklyn and Atlanta – and also on social media sites like Facebook. We’re hoping people here will grab a growler of it and celebrate.”

Stop into these Consumer’s Beverages growler filling locations on Saturday between 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. to get Genesee Cream Ale on tap, available in a commemorative growler (while supplies last):

2. Ah, The Mean Green
Kept me warm during those Ithaca nights. Few things more lovely than watching a sunset from the roof with good friends and Genee.

9. Actually, Carl was my next-door neighbor
(Other than the the Fall Creek gorge between us.)

Based on our experiences with him, I suspect Sagan was probably more of a fine wine and spliff guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Do you have a few minutes to talk about it? Imagine the conversation must have been like this album cover, appropriate background music, anyway:

12. Actually, he wasn't the warmest and friendliest neighbor
He sure wasn't interested in hanging out with the likes of me. I was in a fraternity, so we and Carl had some issues... after he tried to charge us money to come to dinner - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnt1qaZ7_So for details.

13. I'm disappointed to hear that. Celebrities in real life can be
a bit full of themselves. Reality can intrude practically anywhere and be a real buzz kill.

Looks like a great place to live - much nicer than my student digs in Boston in the late '70s - early '80s. Were you at Cornell in '81?

14. I was at Cornell. '80-'85.
It's a beautiful place, and living right on the gorge - just above http://www.world-of-waterfalls.com/eastern-us-ithaca-falls.html">Ithaca Falls - was amazing, amazing.

I think I understand Sagan better now - he was a famous guy and was trying to be smart about coping with many demands. On the other hand... http://www.bigsiteofamazingfacts.com/why-did-scientist-carl-sagan-sue-apple-computers-in-1994

15. The Power Mac 7100 was an icon! BHA, indeed. He should have taken his winnings in
stock options - he'd be a very rich dead grumpy old guy at this point.

Come to think of it, I dismissed the Dot.com thing as a fad, myself. But, I was just a bone-head. Sagan didn't seem to have that excuse.

Have a cold one this afternoon, and let's toast to Ithaca Falls, Carl Sagan, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Anyone remember the band Black Sheep? They used the beer name in a song lyric.

5. Yep. Rolling Rock takes me back too. That, and Schaefer Ale in the green can.

Wouldn't watch a Mets game on a Black & White TV above the bar while playing pool and listening to the Juke without knocking back at least one of those fine local brews.

Ah, the beers of my childhood. New England Dive Bars of the 1970s - back in fashion. (On-edit: only one f in Schaefer - still seeing double after all these years)

16. I remember Jenny
When I was quite young, my grandmother had a neighborhood grocery in Little Falls, NY, and I remember the signs in her store for Genesee, pretty old at the time, featuring the Genesee icon, Jenny. They'd probably be quite valuable today. I also went to college in Western NY, and it was pretty popular there, too... ;)
