Any DUers Live In the Back Bay Area (CA Delta)?

I am moving there around AUG 1 and would like to meet DUers in the area who could show me around so I can find a cheap room to rent. I'm on SSI/Disability, don't drive and get around with a walker, but I do get around. I'm 55, body of 75 due to 25 years carpet installation

I'd love to hear from you.

I'm in the bay area but not in the Delta. Whereabouts are you looking?

2. THe delta is not very friendly to such conditions...

I have friends who live on the delta, and the drive up to the road is steep (they live on the other side of the dyke in the reclaimed farming area)

they have a nice house, it's just their "drive way" is a bit of a bitch to get up and down.

But yeah, im afraid I can't help either. The towns in the delta area nice, and small. you can probably get something in downtown. They have a very rustic feel - at least the last time i was in the downtown of a delta town (8 years ago)

4. hmm, look at Amtrak, that's roughly the BART line in East Bay...

you are on SSI/Disability, don't drive, etc. so you need to get access to a county that has ParaTransit (minivan transit for elderly and handicapped). and by being close to Amtrak you'll have general access to Sacramento, San Jose, Oakland, and SF by BART/taxi/Transbay bus.

i'd consider Martinez (or possibly Richmond in a pinch) for a start. might be more expensive than some of the real discounted places in the delta. but i wouldn't recommend those places personally. you need mobility to live in those areas -- and often a boat along with a car. i'm just not thinking this is wise. it seems better to me to live closer to the 'hood and work the transportation services of Contra Costa.

also think about Concord, Pittsburgh, etc. along the outskirts of the BART corridor. there's also San Leandro, Bayfair (Hayward-ish), and Fruitvale stations where they have cheaper rents. also Castro Valley has a large mobile home concentration, cheap apts, considerably more peaceful, and close to BART, AC transit, etc.

I remember (old man voice) when BART was only from SF-market street to Concord.

Concord is nice, lots of whatever, and very handi-capable access everywhere.
some neighborhoods are ...um... yeah. but every area has those.

thing is we're at least 30 minutes outside of the delta.
Martinez is a beautiful city, but a bit more run down, and prone to flooding every year.
My sister lived in Martinez for a few years, and if you didn't live on the hill, you were going to be flooded. - it's about an hour away from the Delta, but the Main Amtrak station is there (took the line to Reno years ago, it was beautiful).
