Chicago man wears Packers tie to work, is promptly fired
Source: Yahoo

From Chicago's WGNtv.com comes the unfortunately real story of a Chicago car salesman who was fired because he wore a Green Bay Packers tie to work. And making it even worse, the man wore it because his grandma was a Packers fan who had recently died and was buried two days before her beloved team's NFC Championship game matchup with the Chicago Bears.
~snip~
"I don't feel that it was appropriate for him to go directly in contrast with an advertising campaign that we spent a lot of money on," Roberts told WGN reporter Judie Garcia.

Even if the manager's reasons are valid -- and I can understand his concerns about upsetting local customers or running contradictory to an advertising agreement with the Bears -- this still seems like something rational adults should have been able to talk through in about 30 seconds.

I hope Stone lands on his feet at a Packer-friendly dealership somewhere. And I hope he's replaced at the old dealership by a loyal Bears fan who couldn't sell Caleb Hanie a razor.

Da Bears!

Anyone know Illinois labor law? Seems this is a bit harsh IMO.

12. They probably would have fired him for a Cubs tie, too, if they could have.
That's the South Side - Sox Country.

Absolutely ridiculous.

13. there's no law against stupid hire/firing decisions, or stupid employees ignoring clear fire threats
absent an employee contract, a union agreement, or an employee handbook detailing conditions and procedures surrounding getting fired, yes, an employer can fire you literally because he doesn't like your tie. otherwise, the only reason you CAN'T fire someone is if the real reason (stated or not) is due to race, religion, etc.

in this case, there was an actual business reason to not like the tie, but even that is not necessary.

welcome to employment-at-will.

as a practical business matter, it seems silly the boss couldn't find a way to accommodate the guy. but there's no law against bosses being stupid.

then again, for all we know the guy was a terrible employee anyway and this was just the "last straw". according to the article, the boss TWICE made it clear he would be fired if he didn't take it off, and the employee refused both times.

14. The boss was a jerk, but the salesman is an idiot
Once it became clear the boss was serious about not wearing the tie, the salesman was insubordinate for not taking it off. I wouldn't have fired the guy (I might have told him to take the afternoon off without pay), but insubordination is a legitimate reason to fire someone. The salesman doesn't seem all that bright if he put his job at risk over a sports tie.

This one sounds like there is more to the story than what was reported.
