Time to use Borders cards is now

Now that Borders Group Inc. has confirmed hiring a law firm to protect it from being forced into bankruptcy, it's time to dig through the pile of holiday cards, reach down to the toes of the Christmas stockings and paw through your sock drawer for any unused Borders gift cards.

The reason is that, should the cash-strapped bookseller succumb to bankruptcy, anyone with a Borders gift card lying around could see the value wiped out.

"Consumers should do themselves a favor and get to the nearest Borders now to make sure they get full value from their gift cards," says Daniel Ray, editor-in-chief of CreditCards.com, a consumer credit card comparison site. "I got a gift card myself for Christmas, and I'm heading to Borders today to use it."

Borders wouldn't comment, other than a spokeswoman's statement that "it's business as usual in our stores, and we are selling and redeeming gift cards."

1. By some odd happenstance, I just did ...

Had a hankering for some Aerosmith, so I went to their web site and saw 2 CDs I didn't have for $8.99 each. I had some leftover bucks on a Borders card and a 33% off one item coupon.

So with got it all for 12 bucks. w00t!

BTW - It's "Get Your Wings" and "Rocks". How I've gone that long without them, I don't know.

2. It was the shell of the burnt-out Borders that was still standing

When I finally took the trip downtown (they made us park at the Fulton Fish Market site and then walk up Fulton because so much was still blocked off. Streets I'd known since I was 12) to see the damage.

Because of that, I have a real desire to see Borders prosper. (They had the best public ladies room in downtown Manhattan.) This is sad news to me.
