?Why Are Repubs Going to Shoot Their Wad?--something is odd here |
|
Every politician knows that the first party to talk cuts to SS/Medicare will be destroyed. I'm 65 and can assure you that those older people you saw in the Tea Party marches and at town halls are not escapees from the country club---they are blue collar and totally ignorant about the Repubs (remember them holding "no socialism" signs in one hand and "hands off my Medicare" in the other?). Well, the minute Ryan dumps his "kill the elderly and kill them now" speech tonight, all hell is going to break out among that group of voters who DO vote and DO vote in large numbers. Basically all the "must carry" states are states of older voters and the first wave of Baby Boomers are just now signing their retirements! It seriously means even the Tea Pary "clueless" turning like dogs on the Repub Party. Soooo, why would Repubs be so stupid as to do this----unless, we have already been sold out by our Dems and the great "compromise" (i.e., your throats being slit) is right around the corner. Anyone have any insights into this?? The Repukes are bastards but they aren't dumb bastards.

2. Do you know if the transcript of Ryan's speech is available yet? |
|
I'm thinking that even if he assures the elder crowd that they aren't getting screwed - it'll be their grandkids - his message will still be a lead balloon.

3. GOP is good at controlling the message. |
|
They will use some catch phrases about making SS stronger, and making the system more equitable. They let the classism and racism take over. Even the lower middle income people at the rally know some even poorer minorities and they just KNOW those people must be getting over on Social Security.
Changes which make SS "stronger" are good right? Changes which make SS "more equitable" (cut the freeloaders) are good right?
Maybe Ryan will blow it but I have my doubts. The one thing the GOP is good at is controlling the message. Most people think Obama raised taxes when the reality is taxes are lower for EVERY single American than they were under Bush.

I'm thinking the same thing as you are as to their controlling the message----selling dogshit wrapped up like fine perfume! But, there is always one "pontificater" in every place where the elderly gather who will all of a sudden fill his "Depends" when he figures out "I could end up on the street or unable to buy health insurance, etc." And then every other old lady and old man sit there, drink there coffee and say "ya, know Clyde there is a deep thinker and he's on to something...them sumsabitches are gonna a kill us, Mable, their gonna kill us".........and the circus begins.

6. They will simply do it in a way that doesn't affect anybody over 30 or so. |
|
and since Americans tend not to care about future generations they will get away with it.

8. no limit---here's the problem |
|
If I thought they would do the "screw it to a younger generation" routine, I can see how their message would calm the feathers. BUT, from what I've been gathering about Ryan is stuff that they want done right here and right now. Like: give vouchers to people to go out and BUY insurance instead of having Medicare..as if anyone would sell anyone over even 55 a policy for less than a zillion dollars a month, much less people who are 70 and 80 years old!!! They are talking about things RIGHT now......and I just heard one of our Dems today argue with a Repub who did want the "do it to younger generations" and she argued that the current recipients need to be cut NOW! Like I said in my OP, I'm getting the sick feeling that the fix is in and our Dems are going to help screw us like Billy screwed the middle class with stinking trade deals.

12. I just don't think that they are that dumb politically |
|
these guys don't care about the elderly, they don't care about us. What they do care about is staying in power. And they would never screw over the people that they need support from. But screwing the next generation? No problemo.
I could be totally wrong and you might be absolutely right, I guess we'll find out soon. My biggest fear is that it will be actually the democrats that let cuts to social security take place.

4. If you figure out some way... |
|
...that both a.) is Constitutional, and b.) restricts SS/Medicare cuts to people of color, there'd be no problem.
And you could ride it all the way into the White House.

7. They're counting on the morons to continue voting against their best interests. |
|
And the corporate media to spin the bullshit as the only prudent option available to the country. Because we can't increase taxes on the richest 2% or lift caps on the SS tax or have an equitable healthcare system in this country. That's socialism!

9. I agree with Donnachaidh about them not needing the Tea Party any more - maybe |
|
not until the next election. The Koch Bros have probably stopped funding, there aren't any shiny busses to cart the people around, the only ones left, I think, are those who are sincere about Big Government, Taxes, stuff like that. I think so many were part of the Limbaugh frenzy who jumped on the bandwagon because how could a Black man possibly know what is best for ME?

10. Republicans are making a big bet |
|
and the bet is that the 18-40 crowd, that will be the majority in 10 years, will buy into the "invest your own money" line. Completely dismissing the losses Wall Street ran up on most every investment package over the last decade. A major reason that school districts, cities, and states are going under is that they lost so much by the end of the Bush train wreck they could not get through the recession we are now in as a result. One more item the dems have failed to lay at the republican doorstep!
