Worst Democratic SOTU Address ever?
I cannot believe I'm sitting here talking to the television as if a Republican were giving the SOTU. I know nobody said living in a declining empire would be fun, but Christ, this just sucks.

24. It's not that bad. Considering what's ACTUALLY being proposed, the speech itself is quite liberal.
Obama is obviously positioning himself to push a barrage of centrist bills that Republicans used to support and they can't possibly object to, but are nevertheless to the left of the current Republican party.

Edited on Tue Jan-25-11 10:16 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Saying we shouldn't tie people's Social Security to the stock market like his blue ribbon commission wanted to do after the midterms... promoting high speed rail (no applause from either side of the aisle)...

Then again, he wants to freeze the Federal Gov't non-defense spending for five years.

33. He said things needed to be CUT.
This freeze will require painful cuts. Already, we have frozen the salaries of hardworking federal employees for the next two years. I’ve proposed cuts to things I care deeply about, like community action programs. The Secretary of Defense has also agreed to cut tens of billions of dollars in spending that he and his generals believe our military can do without.

62. Some things never change...

"The claimants have already received a large proportion of the sums awarded to them out of the fund provided, and it is confidently expected that the remainder will ere long be entirely paid. After the awards shall have been satisfied there will remain a surplus of more than $200,000 at the disposition of Congress. As this will, in equity, belong to the Chinese Government, would not justice require its appropriation to some benevolent object in which the Chinese may be specially interested? "

37. If he wanted to transform the Federal tax structure, go for a national Sales Tax
Edited on Tue Jan-25-11 10:21 PM by Leopolds Ghost
My organization's accountant turned me onto that idea, it would transform US politics. All Americans would get a flat rebate like citizens of Alaska, which would replace (and be much greater than) the EITC. A national sales tax with corporate income tax, graduated estate tax, eliminate the estate tax loophole and replace it with an estate tax exemption on land and privately owned small businesses (so that people aren't forced to liquidate farms and businesses when the owner dies) and premiums on luxury goods would force the wealthy to pay their fair share.
