Lead found in some reusable grocery bags
Lead found in some reusable grocery bags

The Center for Consumer Freedom found that many reusable grocery bags contain more lead than legally allowed by most states.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A U.S. consumer group says high levels of lead have been found in reusable grocery bags supplied by major retailers.
The Center for Consumer Freedom says of the 44 organizations whose bags were tested, 16 are selling or distributing reusable bags containing lead in amounts greater than 100 parts per million, above the limit many states set for heavy metals in packaging, the CCF Web site reported Monday.

National chains such as CVS, Safeway, Bloom and Walgreens were among those with high levels of lead in their reusable bags, the CCF says.

"Across the country legislators are proposing bills to ban or tax paper and plastic bags, but the unintended consequence of such legislation is that people are using reusable bags, which independent testing shows can often contain excessive levels of lead," CCF Senior Research Analyst J. Justin Wilson says. "As an advocate for consumer choice I believe consumers should have the option of using lead-free plastic and paper bags when they're bringing home their groceries."

1. I never thought those reusable bags were a good idea.....
too many germs, now lead!

I just ask for paper bags when I grocery shop. Never had a problem.

2. I don't eat my reuseable bags.
Or, the packaging that stands between them and my food. I doubt anyone else does, either.

3. P.S. The Center for Consumer Freedom
The get lots of money from the tobacco industry, and think it's just fine to dump pesticides on everything, genetically engineer our food crops, and pump our dairy and meat-intended animals full of antibiotics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_for_Consumer_Freedom.

7. Just following your lead
Went from basic info about lead in bags, to you don't eat them, to tobacco industry, so let's keep going up the chain and go to the logical conclusion - our govt regulates and approves the bags, etc, so therefore if your going to call out one group might as well call them all out.

8. He's calling into question the motives of the agency that performed the study
Not to mention pointing out that as long as your food is not touching the bag for weeks at a time, the chances of getting any kind of lead from these bags is next to nothing. Meanwhile, the benefit of not using plastic bags is enormous.

6. These are bags made in China - surprise surprise
"The tests found lead only in the Chinese-made nonwoven polypropylene bags, not the more popular cloth bags." -http://www.nwcn.com/news/environment/Tests-find-toxic-danger-in-reuseable-grocery-bags-114613534.html

Washable cloth bags are still the best bet.

Just another product that could be made in the USA and would be if we didn't have the insane laws that encourage having products made overseas.

11. Love my heavy-duty canvas bags.
Using "reusable" plastic bags is not much of a step up:eyes:

Cloth bags are the answer.
