Singer Jimmy Buffett falls off the stage in Sydney, taken to hospital
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 09:08 AM by Ian David
Source: The Daily Telegraph

AFTER singing "It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended" singer Jimmy Buffett crashed off the stage after his final Sydney concert last night and was rushed to hospital with a head injury.

Shocked fans at the sell-out concert at the Hordern Pavilion were urged to leave the auditorium by Buffett's Australian tour manager Michael Chugg as the 64-year-old entertainer lay on the floor in front of the first row of seating waiting for paramedics and an ambulance to arrive.

He was rushed to Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital, in Darlinghurst, thirty minutes after the accident.

Neither Chugg nor his assistant David Pope would comment on Buffett's condition at the scene but an audience member said it appeared the entertainer had struck his head and was bleeding as he lay on the floor.

25. Why can't people in the entertainment business just make their
money and then go retire and spend it. No, they have to stay on and on and on until they become spectacles. If I had Buffet's money, I would have donated a bunch of it and then would have gone to the Cape of Good Hope and surfed for 20 years.

27. Capitalism reigns;
There are many one hit wonders but I'd say they only had the one hit in them vs. doing 'the right thing.'

I wonder what you'd say about say a stock analysis who makes a million dollars off of one stock trade or a scientist who wins the Nobel Prize and then quits to make room for a younger college. It works a lot of ways.

20. Not sure that's a true statement.
Because AM radio flogged "Margarittaville" endlessly doesn't mean he was a one hit wonder. The guy has written hundreds of songs that most fans would rate higher than that one. No question Buffett has capitalized on his musical success...but there are few songwriters, IMHO, that have captured the heart and soul of the modern American experience better than Buffett.

Plus, he lifted the Curse of the Bambino in 2004 at Fenway Park - which led Boston to it's 1st World Series since 1912. New Englanders will always be thankful for that public service. :-)

Head injuries are no laughing matter. You are either ignorant or certain that you or someone that you love will never have one! I take care of my sister who is suffering from a brain injury and it takes everything that I have to do it. It is a long road and the brain will never, never be the same. If you made an ignorant comment here you should ask the mods to remove it. Such comments are a disgrace to DU and the human race!

Google his campaign contributions, all (D). Contributed to Hillary's primary campaign, did free concert for President Obama's campaign. etc. etc. etc.

I've been a fan since the 80's, (even had a photo of my car show up on a jacket liner in his first live album). Gotta admit I haven't followed him lately but now that I think about it I believe it's time to break out some of those old CD's and take a trip in time back to Margaritaville.

Get well soon Jimmy.

21. Can Anyone Explain to Me How ....
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 10:05 AM by CherokeeDem
these comments are any different than Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the people that we mock and detest when they utter such idiocy?

Jimmy Buffett is an icon, you don't have to like him or his music, but you should understand that this man is committed to the Democratic Party, to people, and to the environment. His popularity has outlasted more than one 'rock star'. If you watched his concert for Gulf during the BP crisis, you would have seen young people, who knew the words to every song he sang. His popularity also transcends age and gender.

Florida (where I lived for nearly 15 years) did not become what it is today because of Jimmy Buffett and his Parrotheads. Parrotheads are not slackers and druggies...I am one and I'm neither. The Parrotheads I know are mechanics, attorneys, police officers, decorators, nurses, HR professionals and more. A slice of life and people who enjoy the fun, laid-back lifestyle that is Margaritaville. Do we know that life is not 'real', yeah, we're not delusional, just hopeful.

To use a story about someone's injury to promote your own disgusting thoughts, makes those of you who made these idiotic statements no better than Rush, Beck, and the rest of their ilk. You should be ashamed.

Jimmy, be well, we need you.

And greetings from a fellow Parrothead! :hi:

For some of us that lifestyle is semi-real in the summer months: playing in the water, LandSharks (really cold), boat drinks, margaritas and the XM radio on the Buffett channel where it is frequently mentioned that margaritaville is a state of mind. :toast:  :toast: I can't wait until May arrives.

Which reminds me that I must find the perfect place for my new Land Shark bar mirror.

Jimmy Buffett Hospitalized After Sydney Stage Fall

Jimmy Buffett was rushed to a hospital in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday (Jan. 26) after the 64-year-old singer fell offstage and remained unconscious for several minutes, according to reports.

Australia newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports that Buffett was just wrapping up the encore of his concert at the Hordem Pavillion and singing the lines, "It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended," when he collapsed into a pit at the front of the stage. Buffett lay on the floor with his head bleeding as paramedics made their way to the venue and concertgoers were urged to leave.

Buffet was taken to Sydney's St. Vincent's Hospital, where TMZ reports that the singer is in stable condition and remains under observation.

http://www.tmz.com/2011/01/26/jimmy-buffett-falls-off-stage-video-flashing-lights-australia-concert-hospitalized-unconscious

Apparently a concert lighting mistake that caused a huge flash of light made him misjudge where the edge of the stage was. The stories differ on whether he was knocked unconscious for 5-10 minutes or 10-15, but either way it was a pretty serious concussion, and he suffered a head wound as well. I'm praying he'll be all right.

And I'm disgusted by some comments posted in this thread. He's a fine writer as well as a brilliant songwriter and performer, and he's supported a lot of charities:
