Onward Christian Soldiers . . . To Hypocrisy
By William Rivers Pitt

Talk to Mikey Weinstein for even a few minutes, and you get the definite sense that the man must have gills. It is the only explanation for how he can say so much, so quickly, without pausing to take a breath. This should come as no surprise, as Mr. Weinstein has a great deal to say on a topic that affects us all, and threatens the constitutional fabric of the nation: a frontal assault by elements within the active military on the separation of church and state, and a crusade by those elements to transform the Armed Services into a fundamentalist Christian entity.

For Weinstein - founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) - and his family, along with the members of his organization and the service members they represent, that threat is vividly personal. Weinstein and his wife both hold licenses to carry concealed weapons, and have every reason to believe they may someday need them. The windows of their home have been shot out, dead animals have been left on their steps, and - certainly worst of all - the lives of their children have been threatened. One such threat came in the guise of a promise that Weinstein would be murdered, and his children would be bathed in his blood before they themselves were murdered.

Where are these vile threats coming from?

Christians.

Wait, that is not accurate. Let me try again.

Self-proclaimed "Christians." Fundamentalist evangelical frauds who cloak themselves in the words of Jesus and the uniform of the American military while lashing out violently against anyone who does not toe the line of their "true faith." The hypocrisy of their activities is beyond appalling, and flies in the face of the Scripture they pervert with every breath they take.

Weinstein and the MRFF have been working to call attention to a deeply ominous trend that has been spreading through the ranks of the U.S. military, one that exists at the highest levels of power: a push to turn the Armed Forces into a fundamentalist evangelical Christian army, to the exclusion of all other faiths - even mainstream Protestants and Catholics - and even more severely to the exclusion of those in the service who are atheist or agnostic. Because Weinstein has pointed out the absolute necessity of the separation of church and state, especially within the military, he and his wife have to go around strapped at all times, their children live under the threat of death, and their e-mail boxes are always filled with letters and pleas from active-duty service members - almost all of whom are practicing Christians themselves - looking for a way to escape this pervasive and corrosive phenomenon.

6. The liberal Christians who say we can ignore the fundies
are like the cops that don't beat suspects or plant evidence but who cover up for those that do.

Real liberal Christians should be more appalled at what's being done and said in their savior's name than the rest of us.

9. This is how you get a Christiban going, ey?
"Don't panic! Remain calm. We are here to help you. We are here to convert you!"

Makes you wonder how that would play-out in a national emergency, huh?

Well some Fascist, military muscle, (wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross) seems appropriate for the MIC we are enveloped in, actually.

11. The Talibornagain
There are associations at the highest level with The Fellowship. Blatant illegal evangelizing happens at the highest levels in the military and goes unpunished.

16. Evangelical Christians are a huge problem
Edited on Wed Jan-26-11 03:06 PM by blackspade
Unfortunately our corporate masters find them to be useful cats-paws for their agenda.
Religion is a way of exerting control over people. That control can be used for good or evil, in this case evil.
I think that the rise of the talibornagain is a symptom of our of the school 'reforms' begun under Reagan.
The assault on critical thinking, civics, and science is proving successful.

19. I'm a "progressive Christian" and fundies have scared me for YEARS
I find it hard to say "I'm a Christian" because I'm someone who tries to follow the TEACHINGS of a man named Jesus, someone who called people to "love thy neighbor," then followed that command with a parable about a Samaritan ... making it CLEAR to his listeners that one's neighbor was not the next white guy in the McMansion by the country club, but rather those on the margins: the poor, rejected, unwanted. He talked about the importance of doing for the least among us.

I don't know what Bible fundies read. Apparently they only see (a) Genesis 1, (b)select verses from Leviticus, (c) a few select verses from John about one way to God, and (d) select misogynistic verses from conflicted Paul.

Fundies are bullies. They infiltrate and then destroy churches. They push out anyone who disagrees by claiming that anyone who questions is "not a Christian," so should not be taken seriously.

Fundies hate everything Jesus taught. They hate the poor, hate peace, and hate to share. They like the idea of a dead Jesus on a cross who "died to save us all," essentially providing them with a get out of hell free card.

I've watched them in action all my adult life, and I have been trying to get people to take them seriously for years. They are dangerous because they demand complete obedience to whatever specific doctrine they espouse. The Rethugs like fundies because fundy beliefs encourage the poor to vote against their own economic interests and to take hateful stands against those on the margins, especially people of color.

There is NO WAY this should have gotten to this state. This is the result of a population that willfully ignores what their country is up to.

26. We need a commander and chief
with the balls to slowly and quietly purge the officer corp of religious fanatics who have violated their Constitutional oaths. Then, we need to realize that a professional military is not a good idea in a democracy. Draftees would tell these phony fuckers to shove it. Actually, they'd say something more respectful of military protocol. Something like, "go fuck yourself, Sir!
