Hogwash, Mr. President...,..,By Robert Scheer at Truthdigs
http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/hogwash_mr_president_20110126/

"The speech was a distraction from what seriously ails us: an unabated mortgage crisis, stubbornly high unemployment and a debt that spiraled out of control while the government wasted trillions making the bankers whole. Instead the president conveyed the insular optimism of his fat-cat associates: “We are poised for progress. Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is growing again.” How convenient to ignore the fact that this bubble of prosperity, which has failed the tens of millions losing their homes and jobs, was floated by enormous government indebtedness now forcing deep cuts in social services including state financial aid for those better-educated students the president claims to be so concerned about."

2. I will strongly recommend this as many times as it appears.
It is a necessary antidote to all the denial we are seeing.

3. In an age where many of us are rather used to
public relations and spin, (knowing that word magic is the key) I wonder how many people see the SOTU as management on bromides and propaganda on Prozac?

You simply have to move, sway and shake the people, (that are not impervious) with illustrious illustrations of how good it can and will be if you go with the program, despite the poverty of results and the IV of wealth now permanently stuck in the arm of the entrenched and fortified Oligarchy.

I took "win the future" and "compete" to mean something very different. Those terms apply both to games and battles. Who will win it and who is competing with whom seems to be the real issue, here.

7. He has good points, and I am no Obama apologist
but I heard a different message in the speech, and I am sick of all the grumbling and naysaying around here right now.

11. While all the things you mention certainly still exist, our economy is getting better.
And, unfortunately, it will be a long time before some of the things you mentioned will turn around. They all depend on our economy moving forward.

12. Military momentum.
As much as I agree, it's one man, his staff and followers, against an empire and it's money and momentum. We're well established around the globe, with military bases full of employees.

What can he do. I saw the men in suits with their medals, last night. They looked less than enthusiastic. Which is a good thing. But Obama can't do what he wants.

Maybe this has little to do with the speech. It probably doesn't. But the reality is obvious I'm sure. Obama knows. It's why Kucinich wasn't considered by more. Too radical. Too much change.

I think the bottom line is, our economy is well established. Anything Obama does to lessen the deficit will also worsen the employment situation. Again, I'm probably wrong. Bring the troops home, and use them for civilian purposes. That is the part where I'm wrong. It's the only way we can get out of this mess. China has us cornered in the other avenues.
