Egypt reaches the boiling point
January 26, 2011

Crowds of demonstrators jammed the streets of Cairo (Al Jazeera)Crowds of demonstrators jammed the streets of Cairo (Al Jazeera)

...

In fact, if you take into account the number of workers who have been involved in strikes and labor demonstrations in recent years, it is around 1 million. The workers movement has been building up for a number of years, gaining steam and winning concessions from the government. The government didn't always come through. But workers won their strikes, at least on paper, and have felt more confident.

...

The other remarkable thing is that the Egyptian national trade union federation--led by people appointed by the government--has partially broken with the government in the two weeks following the Tunisian uprising. They want price controls, an increase in wages and a system of subsidized outlets for basic food. People can't find staples like tea and oil. For the union officials to demand this is unheard of, because these people supported neoliberalism. That is the impact of Tunisia.

Meanwhile, the conditions facing workers are growing worse. The official unemployment figure is 12 percent, but the real figure is 24 or 25 percent. Food prices are out of control. One kilo of tomatoes--a staple good--is $2; it used to be 35 cents not long ago. That's prohibitively expensive in a country where government workers make only about $26 a month. The question of hunger is real. And now the IMF is pressuring the government to remove the subsidies on gasoline prices.

...

All this means that there is an opening for the left--especially the socialists--to grow. There is new blood in the movement, and the Muslim Brotherhood isn't fighting. It's the left that is taking up this fight, along with new radicals.

...

Will this result in more freedom or less? More democracy or more tyranny? A tolerant or intolerant government?

Those a real questions in my mind. I really don't yet have a feeling for what is happening there.

But I'm always on the side of the people. When you're starving, homeless, jobless, you might as well die trying.

I hope it results in more freedom. It's hard to imagine Egyptians having less freedom than they do now.

the Egyptian Brotherhood isn't officially involved and doesn't want to be. The young people leading this thing want a secular government where Arabs, Muslims, Jews and Christians are all respected. I wish them all the luck.

only a tiny minority there wants an Islamic type state. The people are already chasing armed soldiers down with sticks so I hardly think they would stand for a religious theocracy using force to get into power. From what the press here in France and bbc have been saying most egyptians are very happy having state seperated from religious extremists.

97. french news has been reporting
that most people dont want islamist rule, that historically Mubarak has been against islamists but that the protests against him are not in favor of the "muslim brotherhood" extremists but instead protests calling for another non religious leader. They people are simply sick of 30 years of rule by the same man and recent food price hikes have been the catalyst for protest. BBC radio was saying somthing similar too but perhaps we are all being optimistic.

1. a larger piece of the economic pie (socialism) to the detriment of the rich

2. more government accountability (from a corrupt government working for the benefit of the rich oligarchy instead of the people

(egypt already has a free press and more freedom than tunisia and remember the scores of muslims who went to christian churches when their was the threat of violence from a few extremists last month)

When I see these scenes of revolution from around the world I'm struck by the terrible disparity of force, and how impotent the protesters are. They have no weapons with which to resist against their oppressors. They are left with signs, rocks, and Molotov cocktails.

57. Oh, nothing that everyone doesn't already know here....but I'll talk anyhow
just to hear myself talk :)

Basically, the government has been subsidizing the price of various necessities for the people for awhile - fuel, cooking oil, bread...and that was really needed because the average income of the average Egyptian is about one dollar per day.

Now, I read that the average family in Egypt at this time is living on 26 dollars a month...unemployment rate is horrible. I met young men in Egypt who spoke English fluently, had advanced degrees in things like engineering, and could not find a job.

And the food there is now as expensive, just about, as it is here. Tomatoes, one of the foods often eaten by Egyptians (tomato and mint salad, etc.) are now 2 dollars a kilo. How can a family buy tomatoes to eat, when they only have 26 dollars a month to live on, including to pay rent with etc.?

So there is literally an issue with starvation in Egypt. The subsidies are going away - IMF has insisted on it. The oligarchs of the world have decided most of us peons (including those of us in the US) need to die right now.

So the choice of the Egyptians at this point...fight back or die. That's about the size of it.

I am on the side of the Egyptian people. I don't give a crap about the U.S. agenda in the middle east or our interests, etc. I care about the Egyptian people and want better for them.

60. $2 a kilo? It's over for Mubarak then. He could hand out free food for a month
and it won't stop these guys.

I agree with your statement that they're at "fight back or die" now. Egyptian celebrities have joined the protests. Mubarak's ouster is a done deal now imo.

They're making things worse by clamping down on Suez so hard

Ambitionissta #Suez said to be #Egypt's #BouAzizi as police work on isolating it, reports of electricity & mobile lines going down. #Jan25

What does Mubarak think a bunch people, especially young people, with no electricity, no phones, no computer connections, are going to do now other than get out in the streets?

$2 a kilo out of $26 in monthly income. I'm reeling over here. Thanks

There have been full on riots in Greece, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, the UK and Spain, and general strikes in Spain, Portugal, Italy, and France in the past 6 months.... people have fucking had it with inflation, trickle down and all the rest. I hope to see full on riots soon here again in France, it has been a good 3 years since we have had any proper rioting. us teachers will be on strike starting the 10th of february.... i am bringing my 3 year old down to Marseille to do the demonstration in the hope that the longshoremens strike that started today will either have been won or still be ongoing because those union guys dont fuck around and they bring it right to the cops which will make the protest in marseille a thing of beauty

as in the guys are still a bit macho (think like the usa in 1965) and they all suggested to their sisters, wifes, daughters that it would be best to let the men get into brawls with the police. these people are going out knowing that they are going to get into fights, perhaps it is chauvanism? it would be cool to see women in the photos too, plus you think that it would make the soldiers less likely to shoot knowing that there were women in the crowd in a macho country.

there are at least a couple hundred people. I was looking for hijabs first, but then looked closer when i didn't see any. I see 4 or 5 in the shot you're referring to now... but that's still less than 3% of the group total. there are VERY FEW women in the photographs. I went to the site and loaded 37 pics, really VERY FEW women in ANY of the photographs. I remember seeing a much better balance of men to women in the Tunisia revolt photos.

I'm not trying to say anything about it in particular, i'm just wondering if there's a reason for it. As a Photographer we were taught "head-counting" and "crowd estimation" techniques (Photojournalism class), and in my estimate... these crowd shots show <3% women. That's really one sided.

Just spotted this on my twitter page as you asked.

LobeLog "Police continued to arrest women in big numbers." -Emad Mekay in #Cairo http://bit.ly/hLy24b #Jan25 Gov't crossing red lines? half a minute ago via web

2 – Police continued to arrest women in big numbers. This is noteworthy because young Egyptian women, many wearing the veils and many others without it, are taking part in the demonstrations despite the violent crackdown by the police. I expect this to be a major contentious point that could push more ordinary to protest against the government that is arresting “their daughters.” In this generally conservative society, women are often treated with more respect and are often shiled from dealing with the brutal and abuse police members. It shows how nervous the government is. They are starting to cross some extra red lines.

41. 'Egypt protesters torch govt. building' Suez. Protesting in Metro

'Egypt protesters torch govt. building'

Anti-government protesters clash with riot police near burning tyres placed as a barricade during clashes in Cairo January 26, 2011.

Protesters in Egypt have torched a government building in the port city of Suez, witnesses say, as protests continue against the government of President Hosni Mubarak.

Protesters threw Molotov cocktails at the building on Wednesday, setting parts of it on fire and also lobbed firebombs at the headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party, AFP reported.

Clashes have been reported in Alexandria and the city of Suez, with security forces using water cannons, batons, rubber bullets and tear gas to break up the crowds.

At least 70 people -- 55 protesters and 15 police -- have been injured in the clashes in Suez, medics said.

Total pop. of Tunisia is 10m : Cairo has got 15m all to itself.

They did have fires in Tunisia aimed mainly, I think , at properties owned by the family of the deposed President.

Sadly in the case of Egypt their security forces are better organised and also loyal to whatsisname.

Not sure how accurate this is because I couldn't find the original statement. Egyptians are reporting that this is by Stephen Cook, Chairman of the American Council on Foreign Relations.

America Has Taken Off the Hijab and has Thus Become "Saaferah" #Jan25 #Egypt #Mubarak

...

"The United States was betting on Mr. Mubarak because of past performance. We witnessed his past actions and recognized his ability to control the Egyptian people."

"Mr. Mubarak was able to provide the United States concrete evidence of his ability to use our AID to Egypt in programs that have served US interests while maintaining a very stable regime for the State of Israel."

"Mr. Mubarak's regime has been of tremendous value to our vital interests in the area. We supported him despite the excesses precisely because of the return value of this support."

"Without Mr. Mubarak, Israel would have had to remain in full military mobilization for the past 30 years, and none of the achievements we have made in the area would have been possible."

76. The protestors intent is to keep the police up all night
then all day tomorrow again so that the police is tired out by Friday when they have the big protest after prayers.

Mubarak is closing the mosques in Central Cairo on Friday and banning public prayer. As IF that's going to stop people.

What's the link for your livestream? It'll be handy tomorrow and Friday, if it doesn't get yanked.

From what I read, Suez is in bad shape right now. Over 55 demonstrators wounded. Police station burned down. Gotta protect that canal at all costs. Without it, the war effort will be hampered.

80. This one.
It's pretty late here and I had myself convinced for a dozy moment that this site -

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/cairodowntown

was back up. They had streamed the day before.

I remember a C3 conference from 2009 where one of the presenters commented that when a government tries to block internet, twitter, and texting, it's the best indication of all that they've lost control of the situation. And if they can be kept off balance, the game is over. The tweets and video from Suez seemed to show that the government has both lost control and at least temporarily withdrawn from some parts of the city.

I guess we'll see just how brutal Mubarak thinks he can afford to be and still maintain a modern state. He's probably already been at that limit for some time and was too blind to see it.

Meanwhile, Clinton says it's time for Mubarak to reform.

Really, those people should just buy a fucking clue.

I'm not on twitter. But if you want to follow what I've been following, here's the link

http://fr.twitter.com/search?q=suez%20egypt%20Jan25#search?q=egypt%20Jan25 for keywords Egypt Jan25 Refresh often. It will tell you at the top.

You can also use the google aggregator (thanks Turborama) http://www.google.com/search?tbs=mbl:1&hl=en&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=705&q=egypt&btnG=Search#q=egypt&hl=en&biw=990&bih=726&prmdo=1&prmd=ivnsum&source=lnms&tbs=mbl:1&ei=mQpBTd_DIcnPgAeEyNzwAg&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=6&ved=0CB4Q_AUoBQ&fp=a187a43dd5564fd1

The tweets aren't coming in very quickly right now. I think they'll pick up in 2-3 hours.

You can change the keywords.

I almost wish I were on twitter! Thank you

FM spokesman: Demonstrations not New Phenomenon

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossam Zaki said Tuesday 25/1/2011 that protests were not a new phenomenon. Hossam Zaki told CNN that all demonstrators were protected by the police. But he regretted the death of an Egyptian soldier after being beaten by protestors.

...

Zaki said that the margin of freedom in Egypt is unprecedented in the region and in all Arab countries.

The spokesman stressed that the protestors were not harassed or killed in the streets, in contrary to the situation in other countries. "Therefore, the situation in Egypt is totally different," he added.

...

The spokesman refused to compare Egypt with other countries."The circumstances and conditions are different at the economic and political levels as well as the scale of freedom," Zaki said.

Interior Ministry Urges Protestors not to be Deceived by False Slogans

Interior Ministry Habib el-Adli appealed to protestors not to be deceived by false slogans. A security source said that the ministry has allowed protesters to express political or social demands in line with the principles of democracy and freedom of expression.

Despite the inflammatory approach taken by the instigators for the January 25 rally, topped by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Kifaya and 6 April movements and the National Association for Change, the ministry has allowed the protests, which took place in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria and Gharbiya, said the source.

The source said police forces secured the protests and did not clash with the protesters, despite attempts by some persons in downtown Cairo to stage marches, which completely disrupted the traffic flow.

have been following the reports on twitter. Just read report about Baradie

Egypt's Nobel price laureate Mohamed El Baradie will arrive in Egypt on Thursday to join demonstrations that are scheduled to take place after Friday prayers.

El Baradie's arrival might fuel more people to join the protests.

Thousands of Egyptian protesters took to streets on Tuesday in an unprecedented demonstration against the government.

105. msnbc.com's also reporting El Baradie is calling for Mubarak to resign, arriving Thursday
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41288680/ns/world_news-mideastn_africa/

CAIRO — Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed El-Baradei called Thursday for Egypt's president to "retire," as he prepared to return to his homeland where protests against Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule were continuing despite mass arrests.

El-Baradei, who lives in Vienna, was due to arrive in Egypt Thursday and said he expected to join, but not lead, a major demonstration Friday.

"He (Mubarak) has served the country for 30 years and it is about time for him to retire," El-Baradei, former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, told Reuters shortly before he was due to leave Vienna for Cairo.

"Tomorrow is going to be, I think, a major demonstration all over Egypt and I will be there with them," he added, calling for peaceful protests.

114. "Egypt's new suez crisis"
The violent epicenter of protests in Egypt is an industrial city few outsiders know much about: the seaport town of Suez, which sits astride the Suez Canal as it opens southward into the Red Sea.

Suez has seen its share of blood over the years. In 1967, the coastal town was nearly wiped out during the Six-Day War with Israel, and thereafter was the scence of sporadic guerilla fighting between the two sides. The canal remained closed for nearly eight years, reopening only in 1975.

In recent years, Suez has seen growing prosperity, sending billions in tax revunue from its factories and workers to the government in Cairo. But as in the rest of Egypt, that prosperity hasn't been widely shared, leading to the same sort of dashed hopes that proved so explosive in Tunisia.

This week, Suez erupted in anger as protesters took to the streets to complain about economic conditions and their lack of freedom under Hosni Mubarak's government. It got ugly fast, with several deaths and reports of demonstrators hurling Molotov cocktails in response to a harsh police crackdown. (To get a feel for the chaos, check out journalist Ian Lee's gripping tweets from earlier today.)

Photographs of the mayhem are now coming out. Here are a few of the latest:
