I couldn't get past Ryan's strange blue eyes and facial gestures
to listen to what he had to say. I kept wondering if his eyes are actually that color and who thought his mannerisms were appropriate. I think he had contacts on and even if he didn't then he should have sat further from the camera so the focus was not on his eyes.

Stagecraft matters since it is television I always thought Republicans were better at this part of politics but the last few responses to the SOTU have been horrible for the Republicans.

I did read the speech later.

That his hair cut looked an awful lot like Ronald Reagan. Betcha he was going for that image.

4. For State of the Union response, 'Young Gun' Rep. Ryan told: Look like Reagan
Among the advice Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is getting before Tuesday night’s big speech: Stick with broad themes; don’t be negative; and smile and look like Ronald Reagan.

<snip>

“He doesn’t want to burn any bridges if he wants to get a deal,” said Bob Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a deficit hawk pressure group. He said that Ryan is the perfect choice for the speech precisely because he comes across as intellectual rather than rabid.

“It would be a mistake to go after Obama. All you have to do is smile and talk about how cutting the deficit is pro-growth, and look like Reagan,” Bixby said.
