Marriage Equality Reaches Majority Support In 17 States
Very good news...

http://www.ontopmag.com/article.aspx?id=7405&MediaType=1&Category=26

Citing research conducted at Columbia University, the report's authors found that as recently as 2004 such unions did not have majority support in any state, and only 3 states in 2008.

But in 2010, 17 states turned the corner, including Delaware (50%), Nevada (50%), Maryland (51%), Pennsylvania (51%), Oregon (52%), Colorado (52%), Washington (54%), Hawaii (54%), Maine (55%), New Jersey (55%), New Hampshire (55%), California (56%), Connecticut (57%), New York (58%), Vermont (59%) and Rhode Island (60%).

Not surprisingly, the highest majority (62%) was found in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize the institution in 2005.

According to a 2008 statistical report compiled by Nate Silver of the New York Times, another 10 states – including Iowa – are predicted to cross the 50% threshold by 2013.

1. Old bigoted folks keep kicking off every day
Of course, that is not applicable to anyone here at DU, but the generational statistics on this issue don't lie: the older you are the more likely you are to oppose marriage equality.

Father Time is on our side.

2. The battle has been won.
Once equal marriage occurred anywhere, it rapidly
became apparent that these marriages really didn't
matter to *ANYONE BUT THE COUPLES INVOLVED*. The
world didn't end, the Charles River didn't run
red with blood, and frogs didn't fall from the
skys. Loving couples simply made the same sort of
commitment to each other that millions of us had
made in the past.

And once that becomes obvious to nearly everyone,
what have the religious nuts got left? What argument
can they make that isn't completely, obviously
ludicrous?

Now, equal marriage is accepted by majorities
throughout all of New England and right into the
Mid-Atlantic states. Eventually, the entire nation
will wonder what the fuss was about.

3. If only 56% of Californians could have decided this before Prop 8.

5. And the 55% of Mainers...
I suspect that since then more people have wised up to the con job put forth by those who lied and mislead during the campaigns in both states.

4. Good. Maybe we can get some dedicated grassroots work to roll back the
anti-marriage state constitutional amendments
