Tracy Morgan Calls Sarah Palin 'Good Masturbation Material,' Network Apologizes

Cable television network TNT issued an apology late Thursday for a comment made by "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan about former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin during a live broadcast.

Morgan made a crude remark about the key Republican’s looks during an appearance Thursday on “Inside the NBA."

During a pre-game chat ahead of the Miami Heat-New York Knicks clash, co-host Charles Barkley asked the actor, “Sarah Palin’s good looking, isn’t she?”

Morgan replied, "Let me tell you something about Sarah Palin, she's good masturbation material. The glasses and all of that... She is great masturbation material."

Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 01:47 AM by alp227
It's been a week nearly since that happened, and Limbaugh won't say sorry for that idiotic bigoted thing way more offensive than what Morgan said.

And Michael Savage defended his "autism is a fraud" comments rather than apologizing.

Oh, look at all the dumb things Palin says on a regular basis, from that "blood libel" comment to her silly, worthless response to the State of the Union.

15. Really?
And what makes you such an authority on the psyche of all women? Is that really all it takes for any strong, confident, educated woman to turn into a puddle of wimpering jello? A remark from a comedian is the magic bullet that renders any woman incapable of standing up for herself?

I think your comment is silly and would have zero impact on most of the women I know.

59. Do we "know" that is what Morgan intended?
Or, is it more likely that he was being a comedian and told an off-hand joke?

I find your pearl clutching mildly amusing. Do you really go to such great lengths to be offended in your daily life or is it more that you simply cannot resist lecturing others from your high horse? USing your standards of acceptable comedy, 99% of comedians the world over would have to find another profession. Of course, we would always have Sesame Street to keep us entertained. Wait! Wait! Wait! I guess Sesame Street would be off your "approved" list as well. One character lives in a trash can and we certainly would not want to gravely insult homeless people. Another character has an eating problem in regard to cookies so he would have to go too. We could not abide anyone making fun of people with eating disorders. We would have to change Big Bird's name. Why is he called "Big" Bird when we know that that making fun of larger people makes them "powerless". We could call him "Yellow" Bird, but then again that might be taken as a racial slur. What about just calling him "Bird"?

54. So Vinnie, you'd make a better authority?
I think your hyperbolic response does not answer to the remark you are responding to.

Mr. Morgan has, at least through his words, reduced Palin to nothing more than a sex object. There was no discussion of her in any other capacity. It is evident to many women that this type of comment is usually belittling and i suspect it was meant as such.

The truth is, offense is caused when the target is offended. Palin and Tracy Morgan are the actual characters in play. If she is offended then what he said is offensive. I'm pretty sure he doesn't communicate closely enough with her to have asked her feelings on the subject. He just felt that her potential offense was inconsequential to the humor of limiting her perceived worth to nothing more than an object for his own personal sexual gratification.

77. That is my daughter in my sig line. Her 11 yr old sister took the photo.
I agree, she is a very beautiful girl. She is also funny, kind, very creative, a wonderful daughter and a really solid human being.

It is because i am the mother of daughters that i wish the point being made by so many of the women here, regarding Morgan's comment, was more readily understood. I would not want such a comment to be publicly made about my kids. I wouldn't want it said about myself either, but i tend to feel things more vibrantly where the kids are concerned. If that type of comment were made about my daughter, i would feel more than offense, I would feel as if she had been somewhat threatened and age is irrelevant. That type of comment disregards the person. It disregards the persons history and relationships. It does not consider their preferences or interests. It takes no notice of their feelings at all.

The consequences of indifference to the feelings of others can reach very far.

Suppose a similar comment is made about a woman who endured rape as a child. Hearing such a thing could easily cause very real pain to such an individual. But the commenter isn't concerned with the potential consequences to the individual they are targeting because the commenter has limited the individual to a non feeling object. Where does that end? Is it then ok to objectify all women or only those deemed "worthless" or hated? Is it ok to objectify mentally handicapped women? Emotionally damaged? The very young? The very old? Where does one draw lines and who decides which women will be treated in such a manner while others are protected?

Consideration could change the world.

79. A wonderful response!
You have a gift for writing!

While I agree in a purely academic sense about the harm words can inflict on a person, I also realize that humor is part of the human condition and is no more able to be removed from our existence than sexuality. These are the things that make us human.

If we were able to apply a rule on our society that would filter and eliminate any language that any person alive might find offensive would that make living more fulfilling and enjoyable for all? Using the standards being advocated by many on this thread, we would have NO comedic arts whatsoever.

Again, I would like to sincerely ask you to name a comedian that you believe lives up to your standard of being "unoffensive".

Consideration could change the world, but what kind of world would it be if every comment had to be run through a matrix of acceptability so as not to cause offense to a single person.

84. You realize this comment is not only made with comedic intent.
Edited on Fri Jan-28-11 01:33 PM by FedUpWithIt All
And it is questionable what the intent of even Morgan was considering the venue. I LOVE comedy, even raunchy comedy. But i think we need to be very honest about the use of this type of commentary in daily life as a means to belittle, offend, insult, and subtlety threaten. Without understanding, of the power these types of comments have to make some women feel demeaned, the potential hurt will go on. As a woman, i have to ask you to trust me when i say that women are subjected to this type of thing regularly, without invite. My daughter, the one from the picture, has come to me upset because men have already begun to make her feel less safe through comments, looks and gestures.

The comment you first responded to was suggesting that these are the types of comments that tear women down. I have to agree with that sentiment.

21. Huh?
A man finding a woman attractive is sexism? Sorry, but i can't fathom how you've made that connection.

You do know around 90% of men find woman attractive, and that a part of that attraction is the sexual instinct, right?

Now, i think he's crazy, because i don't find her particularly attractive, leaving aside her politics and dim-wittedness.

But a guy finding a woman sexually attractive does not fit a reasonable definition of sexism.

22. If it was just finding her attractive and commenting on it,
"I find Sarah Palin to be attractive," it wouldn't be an issue. Bringing it to a sexual level, without her being there, essentially locker room banter but on national TV, was out of bounds. Here's a good test. If you can make a remark about a woman to her face without her slapping you upside the head, it's probably not a sexist remark. Another test. Would you object if said comment was made about/to your wife/mother/sister/daughter? I would hope so. The rules don't change just because the woman happens to be a vapid Tea Party tool and yes, I would WELCOME the opportunity to say exactly that to her face.

32. So sexism = rudeness?
The only difference between "I find Sarah Palin to be attractive" and "She is good masturbation material" is the level of crudeness. They are both on the same side of the line of sexism. One is just more polite than the other (and perhaps also conveys a difference in the level of attraction).

It was no more sexist than the question to which it was an answer: "Sarah Palin's good looking isn't she?"

This was just a case of a guy responding to whether he found a woman attractive - without any evaluation, based solely on the fact that she is a woman, of her other qualities.

That is objectification, not sexism. (A very crass case of it, but thats more of a testament to what level of prudeness is prevalent than anything else.)

Huge difference.

You could of course argue that mens objectification of women culturally results in inherent sexism - and you might have a point. But your tests are senseless in that regard.

44. If She Has No Other Redeeming Qualities. . .
. . .i don't think the comment was sexist, but merely a commentary on her generalized worthlessness.

If someone said that about my wife or sister (my mom's dead), yes it would be enormously rude, because my wife and sister aren't useless in virtually every other way.

When Bloomberg Business Week had her picture on the cover and a headline "Why Big Business Doesn't Trust Her", was that sexist? She wasn't there when they wrote that headline, and she wasn't interviewed for the story. But, the fact is, that big business finds here useless, so the business mag wrote about that. The fact is, that for most people except the hyperventilating right, she is completely useless. Tracy Morgan made a quasi-humorous comment (of a type i never make about anybody at any point of my life) that defined that there was SOMETHING that made her useful.

Sorry, but as much as i buy the sensitivity to sexist behavior and speech, i think the offense is misplaced in this case. It was just a stupid joke about a stupid person.

She's a dimwit, she's a troublemaker, she comments vociferously on topics about which she barely knows a thing, she's self-absorbed, and behaves as if she's entitled to her status.

So, in this case, the comment might actually be valid, because i don't really see any usefulness from her.

I never said anything wasn't hurtful or offensive to anyone. I was replying to the ridiculously stupid assertion that Tracey Morgan's comments would be equivalent to someone making a racist comment toward Michael Steele. I said that if you were to redirect this toward Steele, you'd have to say that he too were masturbation material. I got a completely insubstantial reply and that is what I was replying to. I have extremely little issue with someone saying that Palin is mostly useless, because that's exactly what she is.

Ask yourself WHY did Morgan say that?

He didn't randomly grab a microphone and just spew it off.

He was essentially put on the spot by sexist jackasses of their NBA show who decided to play a game of "Who's hot, who's not" on an NBA pre-game show.

52. Ok not to keep replying to you but you are a good sport
If I blatently leave my keys in the car somewhere obvious then no, I still don't deserve to have my car stolen. But I sure made it easy for them to do it. Personally it was pretty boneheaded of me to leave them there in the first place ESPECIALLY if I know it's an area where perhaps there is a chance someone would steal my car.

To take your analogy a step further -

Barkley essentially left the keys in the car with the doors unlocked parked in front of someone who is notorious for stealing cars. He should have known better to do that!

60. yes. but this is what has happened with pornification of women. EVERYTHING set up for fuckability
thru out society and that is why the networks play it, and barclay played it and comedian played it.

there was a fight in subway in ny between two girls. title.... girl on girl fight. article on the economy in a small town. one person said, only jobs are strippers. the rest of the article is on the economy and problem of the small town. because one person makes comment about strippers.... that is the heading to the story. no proof. would suggest that not enough women want to be strippers to fill the job. not a suggestion that economy so bad, lack customers, and still need stripper though they cant get a job anywhere else. one comment in a whole article..... and that is title.

videos showing frozen screen of naked woman. no naked woman in the whole thing, video not about naked woman. but that is the draw to the story.

yes, the news is playing the game, perpetuating comments of whore, slut, stripper, .... and this.

we, as a society has created it. so why stop at blaming barclay. or the network

63. This thread is interesting.

Scrolling down, one can clearly pick out most of the male posters from the female.

I wonder why men, seeing women saying that something is hurtful and offensive to the majority of women, continue to go to such lengths to justify it. Isn't the input of so many woman useful as a gift of insight? Wouldn't it be helpful to try and understand what so many women are actually saying they FEEL instead of trying to continue the insult by telling them that their personal feelings about their value and worth is not worth consideration?

Not speaking for all women and the majority can easily be seen by the cross section from this thread.

But thank you for being an example for the point i was making.

92. "Most women are not that insecure and have a sense of humor."
Ahh, i see. You, a male, are a better authority of what the majority/most women are feeling, in direct contrast to the views of the majority of women on this very thread. Interesting. I also like the part where you suggest that women, who prefer to be seen as more than an object for men to look at while they masturbate, are both humorless and insecure.

"Silly things like what Morgan said, saying a girl has a 'nice rack' or 'I would love to nail her,' are not said to hurt feelings and have nothing to do with value and worth."

Really? Are you certain you want to speak in such absolutes? I would offer that intent to hurt has little to do with actual hurt being caused. Have you ever been a female on the receiving end of such comments? No? And your claim that the comments have nothing to do with self worth or value? Again, you seem to know so much about the female psyche. From experience? No?

My point earlier, that actually listening to women describe their feelings and experiences and actually trying to understand would certainly serve some men well, stands.
Have a nice day.

96. Better authority? Hell no.
ALL of the women I have ever interacted with are why I know and only a few of them display the contempt displayed here.

If a joke makes a woman feel like an object, then she is humorless and insecure.

Yes, I am good with such absolutes, because not all women are hurt by jokes or words. If you are, then say that YOU do not agree with such things. Don't act like ALL women feel a joke or dirty compliment are hurt.

I listen to my ol lady describe her feeling and experiences all the time, but you know what, she NEVER gets pissed when I say something like, "damn you got a nice ass."

You have a nice day also.

When a man can't or won't engage a woman on her ideas or actions and simply reduces her to a thing for masturbation, he shows a that he is capable of placing any woman who offends him in that box. Cheering it on or agreeing with it should be cause for deep soul searching.

110. No shit. Unfortunately, some people always think sex is inherently degrading,
or that finding people sexually attractive on the basis of physical appearance is somehow "oppression"~

That somehow we are all such one-note simpletons that we can't possibly find another human sexually attractive and simultaneously evaluate and respect them on the merits of their intellect and other qualities.

In the case of Sarah Palin, it's not Tracy Morgan saying he'd masturbate to a picture of her that keeps her from being taken seriously- it's the shit that comes out of her mouth, like calling evolution and global warming "hoaxes".
