Alarming News out of Egypt
by Egyptian Association for Change - USA الجمعية المصرية للتغيير on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 4:36pm
by Stephen McInerney on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 7:07pm

Tomorrow the Egyptian people are planning to take to the streets to protest against the repressive, corrupt government of Hosni Mubarak, in numbers far greater than we saw on Tuesday. The government seems to be pulling out the stops to prevent this.

We've been getting phone calls from Egyptian activists that we work with in the past 90 minutes saying the following:

* The internet went down entirely in Egypt roughly an hour ago, 12:30 am Egypt time - first all access to the internet via computers, then also via cell phones (they could initially access the internet via cell phone after computers were not working).

* 1-2 hrs prior to that, all SMS text messaging went down.

* currently, we're being told that large numbers of plainsclothes police officers and security officers are going through the streets covering parked cars with gasoline. The activists expect that the govt plans to light all the cars on fire, claim that the protesters were burning everything, and use that as a pretext to use severe violence to repress the protests, and eliminating all means for the people to relay the truth out of the country.

* they are being told by sources within the regime that very large groups of govt-organized thugs, calling themselves "ikhwan al-Haq" , are going to be in the streets with knives, swords, etc..., attacking and killing protesters in the streets tomorrow; they don't know whether this may be deliberately and falsely leaked to discourage demonstrators; but they do see evidence that these groups are being organized. they may also claim that these violent groups are the demonstrators as a pretext to use violence on the real demonstrators.

* they are all expecting all mobile phone service to go down shortly

They are asking us to help spread the word on all of this information.

Please pass this along to anyone interested.

In the capital Cairo, at least five separate demonstrations were held despite a government ban on protests.

Clashes erupted between people chanting anti-Mubarak slogans and officers, who again used tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowds.

Sky News witnessed a violent scene in which police drove a riot van straight into a crowd of protesters - and they attacked the van in response.

51. Egyptian government on last legs, says ElBaradei
The Nobel peace prize winner's comments to the Guardian represented his strongest intervention against the country's authoritarian government since he announced his intention to return to Egypt to join the protests. "I'm sending a message to the Guardian and to the world that Egypt is being isolated by a regime on its last legs," he said.
...
"Egypt today is in a pre-information age," he said. "The Egyptians are in solitary confinement – that's how unstable and uncomfortable the regime is. Being able to communicate is the first of our human rights and it's being taken away from us. I haven't seen this in any other country before."

He said the lack of communications could hamper organisation of the demonstrations, planned to begin after Friday prayers. "I don't know what my hopes are for today," he said. "It would be hard with the communications cut off but I think a lot of people will be turning out." Organisers of the marches – dubbed "the Friday of anger and freedom" – are defying a government ban on protests issued on Wednesday. They have been using social media to co-ordinate plans, and hope to rally even more than the tens of thousands who turned out on Tuesday in the biggest protests since 1977.

ElBaradei has already criticised the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, for describing the Egyptian government as stable and he stepped up his calls for the rest of the world to explicitly condemn Mubarak, who is a close ally of the US.

Appreciate you keeping this thread going.

I have to get in my car for a couple of hours of driving. Since I have satellite radio in my car, I know that, as this historic event in Egypt unfolds, I will be able to get CNN's updates on the latest in what's happening with Charlie Sheen.

Besides which, Egyptian Christians were protecting Egyptian Muslims while the Muslims were praying today. This isn't a religious revolution. It's an anti-imperialism, rich vs. poor revolution.

235. Who cares what I want to see?
There's plenty of injustice here in the United States for me to worry about--so much so that I am hesitant to preach to other people about how they ought to live their lives. It seems awfully hypocritical of us to be preachy when you consider our own behavior.

Besides which, it is highly unlikely that Egypt will become a fundamentalist, Islamic state. Egypt has a long tradition of secular government (as did Iraq), and Egypt is more diverse, religiously, than Iran.

268. I understand your point
and I also certainly understand your hesitancy to be "preachy", when our nation certainly is no where near the beacon of freedom and democracy it purports to be. But I also realize that theocracy is as dangerous as a Facist dictatorship. My hope is that the Egyptian people throw off their chains completely.

299. We just need to stop trying to control other sovereign nations.
It's not our business what type of government Egypt sets up if this mass uprising is successful.

We have a "terrorism" problem because historically this country has supported autocrats, dictators, juntas, and other nefarious but pro-US regimes in the Middle East, Latin America, Indochina... basically the whole world. That is why there is anti-American sentiment in many different areas of the world. Our hands are dirty and stained with blood. We don't have the right or moral authority to tell some other country how they should be running their nation.

That said, Egypt is so diverse, I don't think that we're looking at a potential theocracy at all.

We're Not Giving An Inch

Deep into your countryside
The reality has changed
And the revolt is brewing everywhere

In this world there was no place for us
We didn't look the part
We were not to the manor born
Not on daddy's plastic

The homeless, the unemployed, workers
Farmers, immigrants, the undocumented
They wanted to divide us
And to say they succeeded

As long as it was every man for himself
Their system could prosper
But one day we had to wake up
The heads had to roll

We're not giving an inch

They told us about equality
And like fools we believed them
"Democracy" makes me laugh
If we had had it we would have known it

What's the worth of our votes
Up against the law of the market?
They say "my dear fellow countrymen"
But we're fucked all the same

And what's the worth of human rights
Up against the airbus sale?
The bottom line, there's only one law, in sum:
"Sell yourself more to sell more."

The republic is a whore
Walking the street of dictators
We no longer believe
Their beautiful words
Our leaders are liars

We're not giving an inch

So stupid, so trite,
To speak of peace and brotherhood
When the homeless are dying in the streets
And the undocumented are being driven out

Crumbs are thrown to proles
Just something to calm them down
So they won't attack millionaire bosses
"Too important for our society"

It's crazy the way they are protected
All our rich and powerful
Not to mention the help they get
For being the friends of the president

Dear comrades, dear "voters"
Dear "citizen-consumers"
The alarm is ringing
It's time
To reset to zero

As long as there's struggle and hope
As long as there's life and battle
As long as we're fighting, we're standing
Here's the key
We're standing, we won't give an inch

The passion for victory runs in our blood
Now you know why we are fighting
Our ideal, more than a dream
Another world, we have no choice

We're not giving an inch

239. File under Lieberman is an Imperialist Pig -
Egypt turns off internet, Lieberman wants same option for US

Sean Bonner at 6:59 AM Friday, Jan 28, 2011

On Thursday Jan 27th at 22:34 UTC the Egyptian Government effectively removed Egypt from the internet. Nearly all inbound and outbound connections to the web were shut down. The internet intelligence authority Renesys explains it here and confirms that "virtually all of Egypt's Internet addresses are now unreachable, worldwide." This has never happened before in the entire history of the internet, with a nation of this size. A block of this scale is completely unheard of, and Senator Joe Lieberman wants to be able to do the same thing in the US.

This isn't a new move, last year Senators Lieberman and Collins introduced a fairly far-reaching bill that would allow the US Government to shut down civilian access to the internet should a "Cybersecurity Emergency" arise, and keep it offline indefinitely. That version of the bill received some criticism though Lieberman continued to insist it was important. The bill, now referred to as the 'Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act' (PCNAA) has been revised a bit and most notably now removes all judicial oversight. This bill is still currently circulating and will be voted on later this year. Lieberman has said it should be a top priority.

We Won't Give An Inch

Deep into your countryside
The reality has changed
And the revolt is brewing everywhere

In this world there was no place for us
We didn't look the part
We were not to the manor born
Not on daddy's plastic

The homeless, the unemployed, workers
Farmers, immigrants, the undocumented
They wanted to divide us
And to say they succeeded

As long as it was every man for himself
Their system could prosper
But one day we had to wake up
The heads had to roll

We'll never give an inch

They told us about equality
And like fools we believed them
"Democracy" makes me laugh
If we had had it we would have known it

What's the worth of our votes
Up against the law of the market?
They say "my dear fellow countrymen"
But we're fucked all the same

And what's the worth of human rights
Up against the airbus sale?
The bottom line, there's only one law, in sum:
"Sell yourself more to sell more."

The republic is a whore
Walking the street of dictators
We no longer believe
Their beautiful words
Our leaders are liars

We'll never give an inch

So stupid, so trite,
To speak of peace and brotherhood
When the homeless are dying in the streets
And the undocumented are being driven out

Crumbs are thrown to proles
Just something to calm them down
So they won't attack millionaire bosses
"Too important for our society"

It's crazy the way they are protected
All our rich and powerful
Not to mention the help they get
For being the friends of the president

Dear comrades, dear "voters"
Dear "citizen-consumers"
The alarm is ringing
It's time
To reset to zero

As long as there's struggle and hope
As long as there's life and battle
As long as we're fighting, we're standing
Here's the key
We're standing, we won't give an inch

The passion for victory runs in our blood
Now you know why we are fighting
Our ideal, more than a dream
Another world, we have no choice

We'll never give an inch

The Corruption Game, by Juan Cole

What the Tunisian Revolution and WikiLeaks Tell Us about American Support for Corrupt Dictatorships in the Muslim World

Here’s one obvious lesson of the Tunisian Revolution of 2011: paranoia about Muslim fundamentalist movements and terrorism is causing Washington to make bad choices that will ultimately harm American interests and standing abroad. State Department cable traffic from capitals throughout the Greater Middle East, made public thanks to WikiLeaks, shows that U.S. policy-makers have a detailed and profound picture of the depths of corruption and nepotism that prevail among some “allies” in the region.

The same cable traffic indicates that, in a cynical Great Power calculation, Washington continues to sacrifice the prospects of the region’s youth on the altar of “security.” It is now forgotten that America’s biggest foreign policy headache, the Islamic Republic of Iran, arose in response to American backing for Mohammad Reza Pahlevi, the despised Shah who destroyed the Iranian left and centrist political parties, paving the way for the ayatollahs’ takeover in 1979.

.....

For a superpower obsessed with conspiracy theories and invested in the status quo, knowing everything, it turns out, means knowing nothing at all. WikiLeaks has done us the favor, however, of releasing a harsh set of truths. Hard-line policies such as those of the Algerian generals or of Uzbekistan’s Karimov often radicalize economically desperate and oppressed populations. As a result, U.S. backing has a significant probability of boomeranging sooner or later. Elites, confident that they will retain such backing as long as there is an al-Qaeda cell anywhere on the planet, tend to overreach, plunging into cultures of corruption and self-enrichment so vast that they undermine economies, while producing poverty, unemployment, despair, and ultimately widespread public anger.

It is not that the United States should be, in John Quincy Adams’s phrase, going out into the world to find dragons to slay. Washington is no longer all-powerful, if it ever was, and President Obama’s more realistic foreign policy is a welcome change from George W. Bush’s frenetic interventionism.

Nonetheless, Obama has left in place, or in some cases strengthened, one of the worst aspects of Bush-era policy: a knee-jerk support for self-advertised pro-Western secularists who promise to block Muslim fundamentalist parties (or, in the end, anyone else) from coming to power. There should be a diplomatic middle path between overthrowing governments on the one hand, and backing odious dictatorships to the hilt on the other.

It’s time for Washington to signal a new commitment to actual democracy and genuine human rights by simply cutting off military and counterterrorism aid to authoritarian and corrupt regimes that are, in any case, digging their own graves.

There are some major headaches going on in Washington right now, because these aren't *the right dominoes* that are falling.

And, very obediently, the 'mainstream' US news media are out to lunch.
