Western Suburbs, IL — A $4 million federal obesity prevention grant has been left to Cook County officials for distribution among 41 agencies in the county’s suburbs.
The $4 million Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) grant, awarded from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has been divided up among to schools, local governments, faith-based organizations, healthcare entities and not for profit and community organizations.
The purpose is to promote breastfeeding, making healthy foods more available and unhealthy foods less available, create more safe and convenient places for walking, biking and other physical activities, increasing physical activity in schools, promote walking and biking to and from school, and increase access to services for adults at-risk or with chronic conditions, including obesity.
According to a county press release, nearly 63 percent of adults are overweight or obese and approximately 40 percent of all children are overweight or obese.
The release further states people who live in neighborhoods with safe areas to walk, bike, play and have access to fresh fruits and vegetables are less likely to become obese and develop serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
Cook County Department of Public Health chief operating officer Stephen A. Martin, Jr., said the funds will serve as a catalyst for “significant community-level change that will lead to a reduction in the incidence of chronic disease.”

This story describes that the county will distribute funds from the federal government concerning the nation's worst health problem.
Obesity and overweight people. Yet the headline uses the word "doles" as if this is a waste, kinda giving away extra unnecessary funds.
The story itself correctly states that it really is necessay try to attack this problem through education and other programs, yet the headline misleads and is slanted.
The right wing press doesn't describe the billions wasted in Iraq and Afghanistan using words like "doles" yet here it does. No the headline is misleading, and it is sad that the distribution of federal funds to attack one of the nation's worst health problems has to be
put into a category by the press that it is "wasted" ...That is what "doles" meanst to me"
