National Archives Declassified 12 Million Pages Last Year; 334 Million to Go

The U.S. government made 12,017,075 million pages of previously secret documents available to the public last year, a total that might seem impressive if it wasn’t for the goal set by President Barack Obama: 400 million pages by 2013.

The release of the 12 million pages was performed by the new National Declassification Center, which reviewed 83 million pages of classified historical records in 2010. The remaining 71 million pages, despite being at least 25 years old, will continue to be classified.

The newly declassified materials are available through the National Archives.

According to the latest report by the Declassification Center, as of December 31, 2010, there were still 334, 016,550 pages still “requiring referral quality review processing.”
